New
Stars Shine Brightly In Nine Feature Race Card At Hamlin Speedway
by:
Steve Pados, GA
Motorsports Media
As
the 2010 racing begins to wind down at the action packed Hamlin
Speedway, the unlimited roster of talented competition shines
through brightly at the speedway as new faces arrived in victory
lane on a great evening of racing excitement highlighted by a nine
feature event race card. The weather in the Pocono Mountains was
perfect for racing and the great crowd on hand was treated to
exceptional racing action on a fabulous racetrack that was groomed
to perfection for the 120 plus racers on hand for the evening.
Twin Twenties for the Regular Slingshots and Wingless 600's were
the featured attractions for the evening.
In
the first Slingshot main event, Bloomingdale , New Jersey hot
shoe, John Bockhorn clicked off the fastest time during the
round-robin time trial period with a 14.202 lap mark to earn the
pole for the main event. Bockhorn took the lead at the drop of the
green flag and drove his Creative Auto Interiors Slinger to a wire
to wire triumph over a persistent Charlie Shaver. For Bockhorn, in
his first season of competition at the speedway, it was his second
win of the 2010 racing season. Shaver was the runner-up with local
favorite Dana Smith finishing third in her Ed Smith Excavating
sponsored racer. New Yorker Vinny Zazzero drove to a fourth place
finish in his Grand Rental Station sponsored machine and defending
track champion drove from tenth starting position to claim fifth
place. The returning Mike McLaughlin was sixth with Shannon Smith,
Mike Fogler, Simon Egan and Nathan "The Wild, Wild" West
completing the top ten running order.
In
the first of the Wingless 600 Micro features, defending track
champion Mark Gilmore clicked off the fast time of 12.299 seconds
to earn the right to go from the pole position. Gilmore grabbed
the lead at the opening bell and the "Wild Thing" lived up his
moniker as he led all laps of the event to score a win over the
hard-riding invader Danny Wykes from Lansdale , Pennsylvania .
Brett Michalski was third in a solid drive from ninth starting
place and Kyle 'The Hot" Lick was fourth with Billy Clark doing
double duty to round out the top five. Luke Schostkewitz headed up
the second five with Gary Berkenstock, Jonathan Hull, Joseph J
Smith and the "Topton Tornado" Brett Arndt completing the top ten.
Charlie
Shaver started the second main for the Slingshots from the pole
position. Shaver has been a part time competitor at the speedway
in 2010 but took off at the drop of the green with Bockhorn taking
up the chase. Tight competition at its best described the heated
action as mid-pack competition was a gunfight between the best
Slingshot racers in the country today. Daring moves and a bit of
bumper tag thrilled the crowd on hand as the side by side and
three and four wide action is the bench mark of the great
competition at Hamlin. Shaver clicked off consistent laps of
14.264 seconds to keep his speed buggy out front and he drove to
his first career triumph at the speedway. John Bockhorn was the
runner-up with Bill Clark racing to a third place finish. The
"Branchville Bullet" Kyle Rutledge drove from 12th to claim fourth
and Simon Egan claimed fifth from his ninth place start. The
second five were Vinny Zazzero, Shannon Smith, Mike McLaughlin,
Dale Kober and "The Electric Man" Colin White. 30 Slingshots were
on hand for the Twin Twenties events.
In
the second feature for the Wingless 600's, Garden Stater Luke
Schostkewitz had the hot hand as he fought off the advances of
Billy Clark for the first portion of the event and then held off
the heated challenges of Danny Wykes after Wykes cleared Clark to
drive to his first career triumph at the Hamlin facility. Wykes
was the runner-up with Clark in for third place money, Brett Arndt
driving from tenth to fourth and Gary Berkenstock completing the
top five. Stan "The Man" Tykarski, Austin Ely, Jordan Tittle,
Keith McIntyre and Joseph J Smith completed the top ten. 30
Wingless Micros arrived at the speedway to do battle
"Slick"
Rick Raisner had the hot hand at the start of the Junior Slingshot
feature and held the lead through the first four laps until being
turned around by Eddie Strada. When racing resumed, third place
man at the time of the incident, Danny Buccafusca, acquired the
lead and the "Rockaway Rocket" led the remaining laps to claim his
tenth win of the season at Hamlin. "The Little Tornado" Zack
Weisenfluh, last week's feature winner, was the runner-up in his
US Air Force sponsored Slinger. Jacob Dunn drove from 8th place to
finish third with AJ Tonkin and Rosalyn Trautschold completing the
top five.
Nunzi Allegrucci, the defending track champion in the division for
the past two seasons, took advantage of a front row start and
drove away to an early advantage in the 25 lap main event. Brandon
Edgar, Rob Pajauis and Kurt Bettler provided the early competition
for Allegrucci and as the race moved past the halfway point,
Bettler fell out with mechanical woes and Ross "The Boss" Perchak
began to blister through the field from his 12th starting spot.
Edgar began to reel in Allegrucci but just as quickly Perchak
began knocking on his door and allowed for Allegrucci to carve out
a bit of real estate and go on for the win. Edgar and Perchak were
next in line with Pajauis in fourth and Connecticut handler CJ
Heinig driving from 15th place to complete the top five. Joe
Smith, Jevon Ahner, Gene Burd, Trevor Dunn and newcomer Jordan
Tittle completed the top ten finishers.
Luke Krobogh enjoyed the lead in the rookie 270 Micros for two
laps before yielding to the "Warrior" Jeffrey Anderson and once in
front Anderson drove off to another great win at the speedway.
Krobogh, in his second Hamlin start, was the runner-up with
Cheyanne Schaffer in third, Brandon Kressler in fourth and Hayden
Miller claiming the fifth spot.
Slingshot star Simon Egan borrowed the Gary Berkenstock 600 Micro
and took advantage of a pole start to lead all laps and claim his
first ever win in a 600 car in his first attempt.
"The Rocket Man" Ryan Wood was finally able to complete a full
event as he drove to the runner-up role with Brian Gilmore, Joey
Kata and Cody Smith completing the top finishers in the first year
group.
Jerry
Hughes seized control of the point at the drop of the green flag
and drove his Castle Distributing/Clark Garage sponsored hot rod
to a convincing win the Super Slingers feature attraction despite
a late rally from runner-up Aaron Henneforth. Henry Anderson was
third in his Mike Griffin State Farm Insurance entry with Tom
Arntz enjoying a great ride in his Tittle's Used Parts/West Side
Bagel sponsored entry to claim fourth place. Bob Clark completed
the top five.
Charlie Lawrence made the tow from New York State for the second
consecutive week and Mike Horton was also back in action. Timmy
Howell was a newcomer who made the starting field but mechanical
woes sent him to the sidelines in the Mark Henneforth machine.
Newcomer John Rooks Jr made the feature events as an alternate.
Duane White made a feature event as an alternate. Robbie Hocker
and Matt Massone made their first Hamlin starts in sometime and
both encountered problems during the evening. Gary Dennis made his
first Hamlin start but he too encountered mechanical problems in
his first speedway outing. Jordan Tittle was on hand driving the
former Darin Bartholomew racer and was scored tenth in the 270
Main . Tittle also drove the Ely equipment in the 600 mains and
scored and 11th and an 8th place finish in the events. Brett Arndt
made another apperance at the speedway and scored a 10th and 4th
place finishes in the Greth equipment. Austin Ely was on hand for
for the evening and scored 13th and 7th place finishes in his
return to action. Bobby Butler suffered terminal engines woes in
hot laps and borrowed the Wood car to compete the remainder of the
evening. "JVD" Jason Van Doren had something break on his racer
and the car turned abruptly right into the fence at the entrance
to the pit gate, destroying the racer and leaving JVD a bit of a
headache. Brian Davis was on hand and the former CSRA sprint
driver was an early retiree in both main events. Kyle Gruber was a
new entry for the Junior Slingshot division and finished 8th in
his first speedway outing. Ross Perchak was aboard the 270 racer
normally driven by Ryan Smith and enjoyed an excellent outing with
the racer. Jevon and Jarrett Ahner returned to the speedway with
Jevon scoring a 7th in the 270 Main . Jarrett was the third
alternate. Greg Stevens is still trying to get back into the swing
of things after sitting out of racing for some time. Adam
Lounsbury returned to action in the rookie 600's and Al Kober took
a guest ride in the McLaughlin racer. Tommy Vroom expired the
motor on his racer while leading the heat action. Former Slingshot
regular Charline Bodine and his son Harry were guest riders for
the evening as well. Dave Dimaio returned to the speedway in his
Buck Rubs sponsored mount but encountered some handling problems
along the way. Molly and Cait Chambers both suffered motor woes
with their equipment. Patrick Perone was another newcomer to the
600 ranks.
Heat winners during the evening included Rick Raisner and Danny
Buccafusca in the Juniors, Ross Perchak, Rich O'Neill and Joe
Smith in the 270's, and Ryan Wood in the rookie 600's. Dale Kober
was victorious in the Super heat action along with Aaron
Henneforth. Cheyanne Schaffer and Luke Krobogh won the Rookie 270
heats. Tin Howell captured the B-Main for the Regular Slingshots.
Stephanie Stevens and Austin Ely won the 600 B-Mains. The 270
Consi was claimed by Robbie Watson.
IRCO Vice President and Harmony Speedway Historian Greg Collins
was on hand for the second straight week and enjoyed the fast and
tight racing action the Hamlin facility provides and commented on
how the racing action is jam-packed with talent in each division.
As the season winds down at Hamlin, many big paying events will be
on tap for the racers to earn some extra dollars to carry them
into the off-season. The final event for the 2010 racing season is
September 18th with the Slingshot Nationals 50 that will pay out a
$1,000.00 prize to the winner and a Junior Slingshot Tour event as
well. September 11th will find the fourth running of the Micro

Hamlin's
Roster Of Great Talent Shines Brightly With Another Evening Of
Racing Excitement
by:
Steve Pados, GA
Motorsports Media
The evening breezes become increasingly cooler as the month of
August rolls through the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania but rest
assured the exciting racing action on the 1/5 mile Hamlin Speedway
provides plenty of heat for the large crowd of fans on hand for
another great evening of racing entertainment at the premier race
track in the Poconos. With a
great race card
in place and a talented driving roster on hand that is second to
none, the racing action clicked off quickly and was completed by
9:30.
The Regular Slingshot feature began with 2010 feature winners
Shannon Smith and Justin Brewster making up the front row
of racers in the 26-car starting field. The "Dirt
Diva" drove her S&S Speedways/Chestnut Hill Trailer/Tire Man
chariot to the top of turn two on the opening lap of the event and
powered her way down the backstretch with the lead. Brewster kept
pace with Smith throughout the event and challenged for the lead
on a couple of restarts only to have his efforts held at bay as
Smith drove a flawless race and came across the
finish line
as the winner of the event. Brewster was second in a fine
run for the roses
with steady Paul Ennes finishing in third place, Rich Van Orden in
fourth and the "Hot Rode" Kyle Rode completing the top five.
Defending track champion
Billy Clark,
Dale Kober, John Bockhorn,
Nathan West and Russell Benke completed the top ten
finishers.
Hellertown's Kurt Bettler outgunned Slatington racer "Hurricane"
Harlee Schaffer on the opening lap to carve out a lead in the 270
Micro event for the winged warriors. Bettler was receiving lots of
heat from Rob Pajauis in the runner-up spot but the racing action
came to quick halt on lap eleven when the "Rattlesnake" Richie
O'Neill found himself outside of the ball park off of turn four in
a spectacular ride from the arena. O'Neill was not injured in the
incident. When racing resumed, it was Bettler and Pajauis continuing their
dual with Bettler finally getting the results he needed from his
racer to capture his first win at the Hamlin Speedway. Pajauis was
the runner-up with hard-driving Robbie Watson in third place,
Connecticut racer CJ Heinig in fourth and Brandon Edgar driving
from 11th place to claim a top five finish. Rick Cascario,
Trevor Dunn, invader
Kurt Conklin, Larry Hoagland and Matt Mountz completed the top ten
drivers.
The Wingless 600 Micros had feature winner from a week ago
Jonathan Hull and Brett Michalski on the front row for the start
of the event. Hull wasted no time in establishing himself as a
contender for the win as he drove away from Michalski time and
time again after a rash of incidents would slow the on-track
action. The allotted time for the event ran out and the action was
halted at 19 laps when the checkered flag fell on the exciting
headliner for the 600's. Hull captured his straight win at the
speedway with Michalski in the runner-up slot. "JVD" Jason Van
Doren drove from 12th place to finish third in an outstanding run
to the front, Mark Gilmore was fourth and Billy Clark rounded out
the top five.
Bobby Butler from 14th, Keith McIntyre, Stephanie Stevens
from 15th, Rick Calvert and Joseph J Smith from 21st completed the
top ten finishers.
The "Little Tornado" Zack Weisenfluh took the lead at the drop of
the green flag to seize control of the point in the Junior
Slingshot headliner. The aggressive field of combatants had a few
skirmishes along the way but the racing action was solid
throughout the event. As the laps wound down and the leaders hit
traffic, the "Rockaway Rocket" Danny Buccafusca found a great line
to race and hit his marks as he cut down the large distance
between he and the leader Weisenfluh. In a dramatic last lap run
for the checkers, Buccafusca caught up to Weisenfluh and the two
young driving stars hit the finish line together with Weisenfluh
just nipping Buccafusca at the wire to claim the victory. AJ
Tonkin was third with
Chris Kurtz in fourth and Eddie Strada completing the top
five.
The Rookie
270 Micros had Kyle Rutledge out front for the first two laps
until his motor soured and was forced pitside. On the restart,
Jeffrey Anderson seized the point and drove away to another
speedway win despite the heavy pressure from New Englander Mick
D'Agostino who claimed the runner-up prize. Cheyanne Schaffer
drove to solid third place finish with Glen Macomber reutrning to
action to finish fourth and McKenzie Harper claiming fifth place.
The Kata-Gilmore continued in the Rookie 600 division as the pair
of talented racers duked it out once again with Joe Kata leading
up until lap-18 when
Brian Gilmore squeezed by to take over the point. As the
field came down the backstretch for the final time Gilmore became
turned around in lapped traffic and Kata stayed clear of the
skirmish to win another main event at the speedway. The returning
Cody Smith was the runner-up with first time performer Aaron
Henneforth finishing third in a race car recently purchased from
Ed Jones. Gilmore and Carol Wheeler completed the top five
finishers.
The rambunctious Super Slingers returned to the speedway to close
the show after a meeting with Promoter Randy Smith to settle the
drivers down. Bob Clark was at the top of his racing game as he
drove away at the start and then held off the advances of Jerry
Hughes to earn the win in the division. Hughes was second in a
great run with his Castle Distributing racer and Dale Kober, Paul
Ennes and PJ Dempsey all registering top five finishes in the
event. Tom Arntz, Henry Anderson, Aaron Henneforth, Mike
Trautschold and Kevin Oliver completed the top ten racers.
The speedway was in great shape throughout the evening as the
drivers were able to climb the banking two and three wide
throughout the course of the evening's events. Four more races
remain on the seasonal schedule at Hamlin with some additional
high-dollar events in place to bring out some anticipated invaders
to challenge the Hamlin regulars with some big bucks on the line.
Heat racing action was sensational with Brian Gilmore winning the
Rookie 600 heat action and Zack Weisenfluh and AJ Tonkin winning
the Junior Slingshot preliminaries. Jeffrey Anderson captured the
Rookie 270 heat win and Keith McIntyre,
Danny Wykes
and Mark Gilmore were victorious in the 600 Micro heat events.
Paul Ennes and Bob Clark won the Super Slinger heats and Kurt
Conklin, Harlee Schaffer and Rob Pajauis won the 270 Micro heats.
Justin Brewster, Shannon Smith and Dale Kober were heat winners
for the regular Slingshots.
Duane White had his second run in his recently purchased Slinger
and was 15th in the main event. Modified talent Kevin Bates had a
night off from his
Five Mile Point Speedway action where he is tied for second
place with Brian Weaver but behind leader Stewart Friesen, and
hopped aboard the Aaron Henneforth hot rod to try his hand at the
perils of Slingshot racing and scored a 21st place finish in the
main event. Darin Bartholomew couldn't attend the races last
evening so Larry Hoagland took over the car and drove to a ninth
place finish. Brittany Tresch took over the Ray Merli machine but
was an early retiree from the main event. Cait Chambers drove a
new car that appeared to be the Jerry Mack machine seen earlier in
the season at Hamlin. Missi Seip encountered the
second turn
fence in her heat event but the determined crew went to work and
had the racer ready for the feature but the car encountered some
problems early on and retired from the event. Wyatt Clark returned
to action but encountered some problems that saw him withdraw
early in the running of the feature event. Modified driver Mike
Trautschold took a drive in the Slingshot he purchased for his
daughter and was scored ninth in the final rundown for the event.
Lea Anna Tonkin and AJ Tonkin switched cars for the night.
IRCO Vice President and noted Harmony Speedway Historian Greg
Collins was on hand for the evening of racing activities and in a
candid interview with track announcer Steve Pados told the crowd
of his involvement with racing and how much he enjoyed the great
racing action provided at the Speedway. Collins, who with the IRCO
Group, spearheads the sponsorship for the annual Dirt Track
Heroes Show at the Phillipsburg Mall thanked the Hamlin Speedway
participants who have made a strong effort each year to come out
and support the event and show the depth of the great driving
talent at the Hamlin facility.
Chris Stockham was back in action with his 600 Micro and had along
with him his 600 Xcel Modified. During the internmission period,
Stockham took the National Parts Peddler sponsored racer out on
the track for a few quick tours around the speedway

Everything Clicks As New Surface And Great Talent
At
Hamlin Speedway Produce Another Tremendous Show
by:
Steve Pados, GA
Motorsports Media
The hard
working Hamlin Speedway Promoter Randy Smith and staff took full
advantage of the week off at the speedway to work overtime and lay
down a brand new racing surface when racing resumed Saturday
evening and the hard work paid dividends in full as another 130
car field packed the pit area and produced another excellent night
of racing at the premier action track located in the Pocono
Mountains. The cool breezes of the summer evening and Smith's
attention to detail kept the speedway racy all evening long before
a jam-packed crowd who came out to witness the superb racing
action. Seven features highlighted the race card and
every division offered something different for the fans
perspective and the hotly contested racing action was completed by
10 PM.
The show
kicked off with a strong series of hard hitting heat action and
the rookie 600 Micros took to the speedway for the first feature
event. The on-going "Gladiator-Wild Child" show commenced
with "The Wild Child" Brian Gilmore out-gunning the "Goshen
Gladiator" Joe Kata at the drop of the green flag and leading
every lap to record another win at the speedway with Kata in for
second place money. The New Englander Mick D'Agostino kept pace
with a third place finish and newcomers James Newman and Carol
Wheeler completed the top five.
"The
Midget" Chris Kurtz grabbed the lead at the start of the Junior
Slingshot feature event with Eddie Strada following close behind.
Kurtz led up until lap six when the "Rockaway Rocket" Danny
Buccafusca changed lanes off of turn two to pull up alongside of
Kurtz and power away with the lead. Buccafusca led the remaining
laps to record his ninth win at the speedway in 2010. Kurtz was
strong in the runner-up role as he nipped Strada, who enjoyed
great run for third place. Roz Trautschold was fourth as she raced
back from an early spin and Ricky Raisner completed the top five
after recovering from a spin at mid-point in the event to race
back with another solid performance.
The 270
Micro Sprint rookies had Mick D'Agostino doing double duty and he
grabbed the lead at the drop of the green flag and drove away from
the field to land in victory lane. Kyle Rutledge raced from eighth
place to the runner-up spot by the mid-point of the event and
finished second. Cheyanne Schaffer was third with the Team cars of
Scott Solt and Brandon Kressler completing the top five.
The regular
270 Micro event had Garden Stater Mike Esposito starting on the
pole for the event and he withstood a rash of cautions to capture
the win in a wire to wire triumph in his Esposito's Lawn and
Garden Center sponsored racer. Joe Smith was the runner-up with
Connecticut's CJ Heinig racing to third place money. Rob Pajauis
raced his Delp Racing Engines sponsored jalopy from the top to the
bottom of the raceway to drive from 17th starting place to finish
fourth. Gene Beadle completed the top five.
Super
Slinger action found Carbondale gunslinger Paul Ennes with a belt
full of bullets and he was forced to use all of the ammunition at
his disposal to hold off a determined Tommy Vroom Jr. to capture
the main event. The race proved to be an excellent battle for the
over-35 crowd as Vroom was quicker in lap-times but Ennes
crossed under the checkered flag first to gain the win. with Vroom
in second. "Double J" Jimmy Johnston had the best seat in the
house as he watched the action in front of him as he finished
third and Henry Anderson and Jerry Hughes rounded out the top five
running order.
The always
entertaining 600 Wingless Micros took to the speedway with a
27-car starting line-up and Meriden, Connecticut racer Jonathan
Hull proved to have the hot hand as 25 of the 27 starters
completed all of the laps of the event and the racing action was
tight from start to finish. Hull was at the top of his racing game
as Tony Iudicello, Kyle Lick and Bobby Butler put plenty of
pressure on Hull from start to finish. Hull, Iudicello, Lick and
Butler were the top four with Stan "The Man" Tykarski rallying for
a last lap pass to make his way into the top five. Brett Michalski,
Brittany Tresch, Ryan Smith, Keith McIntyre and Geordan Farry
completed the top ten.
John
Bockhorn, a first year competitor from Bloomingdale, New Jersey,
made the best from a pole start as he was credited with the win
despite not passing under the checkered flag first. As the laps
wound down for the event, Kyle "Hot Rod" Rode was applying a ton
of heat to Bockhorn to try to find the way around the Garden
Stater. A restart on lap-23 had Rode pulling up along side of
Bockhorn and grabbing the lead in turn one and leading the parade
of speed buggies to the finish line. It was determined that Rode
jumped the start and the decision placed Bockhorn back on top as
the winner of the event. Mack Brink was second and the two-place
penalty assessed to Rode put him in third place in the final
rundown. Russell Benke drove his Greenfield Health Care machine to
fourth place and defending track champion Billy Clark drove to
fifth place to round out the top five. Jimmy Johnston, Shannon
Smith, Charlie Lawrence, Jeff Cosgrove and Vinny Zazzero completed
the top ten finishers.
POCO-NOTES:
Heat racing
action at Hamlin has always proved to be like mini-feature events
and last night was no exception to the rule. Chris Kurtz and Roz
Trautschold were heat winners for the Juniors. John Bockhorn,
Shannon Smith and Jess Benke claimed wins in the Regular Slingshot
heats. Mick D'Agostino captured the heat win for the 270 Micro
rookies. and Joe Kata was the heat winner for the rookie 600
Micros. 600 Wingless Micro heats were claimed by Keith McIntyre,
Tony Iudicello and Shannon Smith. Super Slinger heats went to
Tommy Vroom and Jimmy Johnston. Three heats were required for the
270 Micros and the winners were Brandon Edgar, Richie O'Neill and
Ryan Smith.
Newcomers
to the Hamlin Speedway for the racing action included James Newman
and Carol Wheeler in the rookie 600 class. Greg Spangler made his
first appearance of the season aboard one Gene Burd's race cars.
Greg Stevens made his second Hamlin start but was an early retiree
in the main event. Modified driver Dwayne Robbins returned to his
racing roots as he drove the Billy Clark Slinger in Super Slinger
action. Dave McCullough made his second Hamlin start and was 11th
in the main event for the Supers. John Rooks was a new entry and
both Junior and Senior Rooks competed in the night's action. Herb
Finger was in the S&S Rental car. Dave Fulton was a newcomer to
the rookie 270 ranks and was also an early retiree as new car bugs
plagued the team throughout the evening. Ryan Smith was surprise
visitor to the speedway and saw action in both the 270's and
600's. "Flyin" Ryan was eighth in the 600 event and had an early
dismissal from the 270 feature. Smith was coming off a second
place performance the evening prior as he drove the Jerry Steward
Midget to an outstanding runner-up in the ARDC at the Accord
Speedway. Ryan Greth, who also competed the evening prior at
Accord in the Burke Trucking Midget, was on hand but couldn't get
untracked and finished 12th in the 600 main. Stephanie Stevens,
who also returned to Midget racing at Accord, finished 14th at
Hamlin and Rob Vivona also made his return to the
speedway and scored a 16th place run. Danny Wykes made the drive
up from Landsale for his second appearance at the speedway and got
turned around during the feature and was scored in 21st position.
Joe Kata did double duty in both the rookie and regular 600 mains
and was 18th in the regular to go along with his runner-up in the
rookies. Ben Quinones had a new racer on hand but had some
mechanical issues throughout the evening. Molly Chambers was
aboard the the second Michalski machine. Cory Haab returned to
action at Hamlin after racing there early in the season. Dan
Souder and Robbie Watson brought the crowd to it's feet with a
spectacular double flip in front of the grandstands. Neither
driver was injured in the scary incident and both returned later
for the feature.

Gracious Hearts And
Lots of "Spark" Punctuate Outstanding Hamlin Speedway Race Card
by:
Steve Pados, GA
Motorsports Medi
Turning the Hamlin Speedway grounds into a country fair early in
the morning was a task most people would shy away from. This past
Saturday morning, a loyal work force with not many hours of sleep,
did just that as Megan Ammirato, Shannon Smith, Katie Sassano, the
Smith Family and many speedway supporters transformed the speedway
grounds into money raising venue for the "Sparkman" Mark
Berkenstock, who was severely injured at the speedway two weeks
ago. The fund-raiser began at 10 AM and the crowd gained momentum
right away as many of the racers towed in early to join the great
crowd on hand supporting the fund raising efforts. The Berkenstock
Family was on hand for part of the day and addressed the crowd
through heavy hearts and thanking everyone for their gracious
support. Weis Supermarkets hosted the racing activity at the
speedway for the second time this season
Great baked goods, the bounce house, a bountiful Oriental Auction,
assorted games, sand art, pie in the face, and the celebrity dunk
tank were all of the morning's events and gave such strong
indication of the tremendous support the racers have for one
another in such a demanding and competitive sport. Radio
personality "Happy Jack" Burns of the award winning WALN studios
was on hand with WALN Party Girl Miss Layla and Layla did her part
in the Dunk Tank as the cold water greeted her many times with her
stay on the perch. Speedway Promoter Randy Smith donning a new
hairpiece, Sponsor and track worker Ron Brown, cornerman Woody,
and Speedway Entertainment guru Rich Tobias all took part in the
dunking ceremonies that was done for a great cause. IRCO Vice
President Greg Collins was on hand and brought some auction items
along with him, the "Original Lady Outlaw" open wheel star Mares
Stellfox and her son Matthew came out for the day as Mares and her
Mom graciously offered a weekend stay at their homes at Arrowhead
Lakes to the highest bidder as part of the auction process. The
bidding for the weekend stays will be in place for at least two
weeks and will be offered on the CARQUEST Gasoline Alley
TV/Internet show as well to raise as much capital as possible for
the Berkenstock Family. Mares was later coerced by NASCAR
personality Kevin White to join them in the NASCAR Crew Challenge
later in the evening and Mares did her usual great job for her
first time in a Slingshot racer. The many on-going mechanisms in
place to assist the "Sparkman" are continuing as the Bracelets,
the Stickers, the Dickie Keiper Racing Supplies race prize raffle,
the Jim Young Race Photos raffle are just a part of the plans in
place to keep raising money for the injured Berkenstock. Sonny
Croughn was on hand with his "World's Baddest Trike". The Big
Block Chevy powered Trike was a hit and included Miss Layla doing
a photo session with the popular celebrity Croughn from nearby
Lake Ariel, Pennsylvania. "The Eynon Aggressor" Ben Whitaker had
his Penn Can Late Model race car on hand fresh off of a third
place finish the previous night at the speedway. Whitaker was the
2008 National Slingshot Champion. Gary Palmer Jr. was on hand for
the pie in the face fun and thoroughly enjoyed getting creamed by
his friends. When questioned whether it was cream or oil, his food
wizardry knew it was Reddi-Whip. Gary and Donna Palmer, the
successful Accord Speedway promoters were on hand for the event.
Michalski Heating and Kelley Fuels combined on a raffle of a 55
gallon of Fuel won by Mr Arnold.
Yes and there was great racing, lots of it. With 139 race cars
signed in to do battle plus the twelve NASCAR notables, the
standing room only crowd was treated to outstanding racing action
in all divisions. After a series of quickly paced heat racing
action, the features rolled off the starting grid with perfection.
The rookie 270 Micros kicked it off with New Englander Mick
D'Agostino grabbing the lead at the start of the event and driving
away from the rest of the field to gather in another win at the
speedway. Hard charging Missi Seip was solid as the runner up for
her best performance to date and first timer Scott Solt was third
in a great drive. Jeffrey Anderson overcame his heat race woes to
finish fourth and Hayden Miller was steady with a top five
performance.
Recent feature winner Eddie Strada and Ricky Raisner brought the
17-car starting field for the Junior Slingshots down for the start
of their 20-lap encounter. Strada led the first lap before
yielding to Ricky Raisner who led for two laps before giving
way to the high flying Danny Buccafusca. Raisner stayed close for
most of the event but Buccafusca found his line quickly and reeled
off a new track record at 14.419 seconds only to top it two laps
later with a clocking of 14.373 seconds. Buccafusca added to his
win total in this triumph and Raisner was the runner up. Tyler
Dippel was third with Zack Weisenfluh fourth and Dylan Martin
completing the top five.
Rookie 600 Wingless Micro action found "The Goshen Gladiator" Joe
Kata jumping out front at the start of the event and driving away
from the field to add another win to his spectacular rookie season
at Hamlin. Mick D'Agostino recovered from an early spin to drive
back through the field to finish in the runner up slot with Ryan
Wood in third, Dylan Menditto in fourth and newcomer Zach Davis
completing the top five.
The regular 270 Micro event proved to be the Allegrucci show for
defending track champion Nunzi Allegrucci. The Scranton resident
took the lead at the drop of the green and wired the field despite
repeated efforts by Garden Stater Rob Pajauis to dislodge him from
first place. "The Boss" Ross Perchak turned up in the Widdos ride
for the evening and finished with a solid third place performance.
Brandon Edgar and Gene Burd completed the top five finishing
positions. The event was a timed event that saw the finish come a
few laps short before completion of the scheduled number of laps.
Super Slinger action found "Double J" Jimmy Johnston returning to
action after a couple of event hiatus. Johnston took full
advantage of a front row starting spot to drive his Chestnut Hill
Trailers/Janet's Fitness Center sponsored Slinger to a wire to
wire triumph despite repeated challenges by Henry Anderson who
finished scond. A late charge from Carbondale gunslinger Paul
Ennes netted him a third place in the event and Tommy Vroom Jr and
Aaron Henneforth completed the top five.
The always entertaining 600 Wingless Micros took to the speedway
and the "Conductor" Bobby Butler conducted the clinic as he led
from start to finish in his newly numbered Hell on Wheels Racing
chariot. Brett Schoenly made one of his infrequent visits a good
one as he finished in the runner up slot despite constant pressure
from Brett Michalski. Kyle "The Hot" Lick, who has been on fire of
late, added another great finish to his racing resume with a
fourth place finish and Meriden , Connecticut hot shoe Jonathan
Hull completed the top five. The evening of events had North
Carolina resident by way of Phoenix . Arizona NASCAR and open
wheel star JJ Yeley on hand for the occasion and Yeley drove one
of the Michaski buggies to a ninth place finish at the event,
lending credence to the tough competition that can be found on a
weekly basis at the Pocono oval.
Simon Egan used his pole start to gain command of the Mid Atlantic
Slingshot Tour event on tap and drove away to an early lead in the
event. Defending National Slingshot Champion, "The Bangor
Renegade" Cody Kline raced into the runner up slot late in the
event and applied plenty of pressure to Egan but this was the
night for Egan to shine in victory lane. Kline was the runner up
with newcomer to the sport Mike Fogler continuing to impress the
railbirds with a solid third place finish. Dale Kober was fourth
with Jimmy Johnston getting another top five finish in the
process. Invader Brett Beiber was sixth with Billy Clark, Nathan
West, Jess Benke and John Pantis completing the top ten.
The NASCAR Crew Challenge had Kevin White and Todd Carmichael
trading the lead back and forth with Mike Williams until Williams
found himself facing traffic with a spin. On the restart it was
White and Carmichael continuing to duke it out for speedway
bragging rights with White prevailing and Carmichael a close
second. Adam Keisler was silently doing a great job and was in
for third place with Carter Fischlein charging late to gain a
fourth place finish and Sean Kerlin racing to fifth. John Hunter
Nemechek was sixth with Mares Stellfox in seventh. David Cropps,
Mike Williams, Brad Tunney, Jeff Handwerk and Bob Decker completed
the notables on hand for the event.
Heat racing action at Hamlin has always proved to be like
mini-feature events and last evening was no exception to the rule.
The dual heat format for the Slingshots prevailed and winners were
Rich Van Orden, John Bockhorn, Nathan West, Billy VanInwegen, JR
Fulper and newcomer Clint Miller. Ricky Raisner and Eddie Strada
were heat winners for the Junior Slingers. Henry Anderson and Paul
Ennes were the Super Slinger winners. Mick D'Agostino was the
rookie 270 Micro heat winner and also captured the rookie 600 heat
win. Gene Burd, Trevor Dunn and Mike Esposito captured the 270
Micro heat wins. Brian Gilmore, making his first start in the
regular 600's captured a heat win along with Billy Clark and Brett
Schoenly.
Driver Joseph J Smith provided the invocation to begin the evening
of racing and Kim Rutledge delivered the National Anthem with her
usual great performance.
Newcomers included team cars of Scott Solt and Brandon Kressler in
the 270's. Jess Coons also made her first start at Hamlin. Accord
Speedway regular Tyler Johnston was on hand for the event and TJ
Lilly returned to action fresh off a win at the Kutztown
Fairgrounds. Zach Davis was a new arrival in the rookie 600's. Lou
Horvath made his first Hamlin start that also found Marc
McConnell, Greg Stevens and Dan Souder returning to action. Former
Modified star Johhny Strupp was on hand for the event as was
current Accord Speedway Modified Star "Vinny D" Vinny DeCicco and
current OCFS star Billy Van Imwegen. Dave McCollough made his
first Hamlin start in some time as did the "Iceman" Marc Daniels.
Stephanie Stevens returned to the speedway in 600 Micro action in
the former Jeff Schall machine. Former CRSA sprint driver Brian
Davis was in the field as was the always tough Jesse Hartman.
Chris Stockham returned to the speedway after a Friday evening run
at Linda's Speedway . Charlie Lawrence, Matt Mertz, John Desantis
and Matt Dealaman were on board for the event as well but
Dealaman was given the nod to start the main as a tour
provisional. Brad Arnold and Travis Beiber made the show from the
tour and Arnold with a 17th and Travis with an 18th was the best
they could do with a such a tough field on hand for the event in
the tough 33 car field of entries. Emily VanInwegen made her start
in over a year and drove to 14th place finish showing she hasn't
lost her touch with the Slingshot cars. Hamlin Speedway continues
to raise the bar for Slingshot racing in the United States and
provides the great exciting racing action most full size
division speedways cannot duplicate.
Weis Supermarkets has been operating
successful grocery stores in a five state area since 1912. The
Sunbury based retailer has grown to 165 stores since the purchase
of the Mr Z's and King's Supermarkets in the late 90's and owns
another 30 stores under the pet theme name of Super Pets. With
many in-house labels such as Weis Quality, From the Field, Big
Top, Carnival and Dutch Valley , Weis Markets has grown to be
among the leaders in the vast supermarket industry today. Weis
employs 16,600 people and the strong community ties have developed
the sponsorship support and opportunities for the Hamlin Speedway
and it was the second successful promotion of the season for
Hamlin Speedway and the grocery store magnate. Megan Ammirato has
helped develop the partnership the speedway hopes will be in place
for many years to come. For more information regarding Weis

Hamlin Speedway
Overcomes Rain Delay
To Complete Nine Feature Event Card On S&S Speedway Night
by:
Steve Pados, GA
Motorsports Media
Sharp arithmetic, a loyal work force, a dedicated field of racers
and a great group of racing fans all added to last evening's
racing events at the Hamlin Speedway as the Smith Family refused
to yield to the forces of nature and soldiered on to complete a
nine feature event card at the premier seven division racing
facility in the country. The racing was spectacular as always
despite the fact some of the races were shortened in distance due
to time restraints. The great night of racing will set the stage
for the upcoming Mid Atlantic Slingshot event on Saturday July
31st that will share the spotlight with the second round of the
NASCAR Crew
Challenge and a full day of fun and activity starting at 10 AM in
the morning to support injured driver Mark "Sparkman" Berkenstock.
All proceeds of the "Sparky Spectacular" will go directly to the
Berkenstock Family to assist in off-setting the medical bills that
mount up on a daily basis.
The evening began with the make-up event from a week ago for the
Regular Slingshot racers. "The Jet" Justin Brewster grabbed the
lead racing into turn one and held off some determined advances by
fellow division rookie Jess Benke to lead all laps and go on to
record his second win of the season at the speedway in his Rapid
Rooters / HigFab / Royal Furniture sponsored mount. Benke gave
herself a birthday present with a great runner up run in her
Jordan Towing sponsored racer. Defending National Slingshot
champion "The Bangor Renegade" Cody Kline showed why he is the
current champion as he drove his RG Hoffman / Klines Auto Repair
hot rod from 12th starting place to finish in third place. Paul
Ennes enjoyed another strong run with a fourth place performance
and Troy Langendorfer continues to impress with a fifth place run
in his Rescue Engine Performance racer. Shannon Smith, John
Bockhorn, Kyle Rode, Colin White and John Pantis completed the top
ten.
The make-up 270 Micro event had Wapwallopen's Gene Burd gassing
his Knorr Hauling sponsored chariot out front at the start of the
event and holding off the early advances of Darin Bartholomew in
his Elite Pools machine to drive into victory circle at the end of
the shortened event. Rob Pajauis was third with Austin Burke and
Rick Cascario completing the top five. Robbie Watson, CJ Heinig,
Kurt Bettler, Ed Kenderdine and Harlee Schaffer completed the top
ten.
"The Conductor"
Bobby Butler
took his Hell on Wheels sponsored racer to the point at the
opening bell and led all laps to claim another victory at the
speedway despite constant pressure from Kyle "The Hot" Lick in his
Rusty Smith
Excavating sponsored
speed buggy in the shortened event. Connecticut 's Jonathan
Hull was third in the event after falling back a few notches early
in the running of the event and then pedaling back to third in a
great performance. Newcomer Danny Wykes made his first Hamlin
visit a good one as he drove from 9th starting spot to claim
fourth place and Gary Berkenstock completed the top five in a
solid drive. Mark Gilmore, Matt Mountz, Parker Evans, Shane
D'Agostino and Billy
Clark completed the top ten finishers
"The Rockaway Rocket" Danny Buccasfusca took the lead at the start
of the Junior Slingshot encounter and held off the early advances
of "Fast" Eddie Strada to add to his laurels at the speedway. Both
drivers were very close in turning times around the raceway but
Buccafusca was quicker in lapped traffic and it proved to be the
margin of victory for the Garden Stater. Strada was the runner up
with birthday boy "The Midget"
Chris Kurtz
racing to third place and the "Little Tornado" Zack Weisenfluh
driving the wheels off of his US Air Force sponsored mount with a
fourth place finish after starting 14th. "The Communicator" Mathew
Gaughan completed the top five.
The rookie 600 Wingless Micros saw a downturn in equipment for the
first time all season but the quality was great as Joe Kata and
Brian Gilmore
continued their season long competitive racing with another great
dual at the speedway. Kata was the winner with Gilmore in the
runner up slot and Ryan Wood finishing third.
Jeffrey Anderson had the hot hand in the rookie 270 Micro racing
action as the Port Crane, New York racer forged ahead at the start
of the event and led all laps to claim the win. Mick D'Agostino
was the runner up in a great drive with Missi Seip, Kyle Rutledge
and Cheyanne Schaffer completing the top five.
Tommy Kunsman Jr. scored his first career win at the speedway and
did so in convincing fashion as he led all laps on his way to
victory lane. Hard-driving Robbie Watson drove his SBF sponsored
racer to the runner up spot after starting tenth in the field.
Gene Burd rallied for third place and Rob Pajauis continued his
great work at the speedway as he drove from 19th starting spot to
land in fourth place when the
checkered flag
fell on the event. Mike Esposito completed the top five. Mark
Gilmore, Ed Kenderdine, Brandon Edgar, Mark Manieri and Larry
Hoagland completed the top ten.
The Super Slinger shootout was paired by ten laps but the
excitement was plentiful as Aaron Henneforth drove his recently
purchased new H-4 Property Management hot rod to the lead at the
drop of the green and led all of the laps in the thirty lap event
but had to hold off a determined challenge by the hard-driving
Henry Anderson after the midway point of the race.
Anderson cut
a half a lap lead off of Henneforth as the laps dwindled down to
finish just behind Henneforth when the
checkered flag
fell. "The Pride of Pen Argyl" Dale Reed drove from tenth place to
finish third with Bob Clark and Paul Ennes completing the top
five.
Russell Benke was in search of his second win of the season at
Hamlin and led the first seven laps until defending track champion
Billy Clark
took advantage of an opening off the
second turn
to power his way out front and go on to record the win in the
curtain closer of the evening. Benke did manage a second place
with "Mighty" Mike Horton finishing third in a great drive and
Kyle "Hot Rod"
Rode finishing fourth. Kyle Rutledge completed the top five.
Shannon Smith, Paul Ennes, Dale Kober, John Pantis and Cody Kline
completed the top ten.
The Smith
Family sends out a huge thank you to all of the Super
Slinger drivers who made the solid effort to help dry out the
racing surface when the rain-clouds appeared. While it delayed the
racing program, the rain made the track extremely racy and the
side by side action was appreciated by another great fan count for
the racing activity.
Slingshot hot shoe Kyle Rode donated all of his winnings from the
evening to the Children's Diabetes Research in Memory of Frank
Franzetta.
New racers were again in abundance as the Super Slingers had
Albany , New York
hot shoes Justin Haas, Tom Rotondaro and Wes Hearn in town for
the evening. Rotondaro scored an 8th and 11th place finishes for
his efforts and while Haas captured a heat race win, he failed to
start the remaining features for the remainder of the evening. 600
Wingless racing brought
Lansdale ,
Pennsylvania hot shoe
Danny Wykes
to the speedway and he responded with a fourth place in his Hyper
race car. "The Barre Bandit"
Matt Seymour
made his first Hamlin start and the Massachusetts racer scored an
11th place finish in his initial Hamlin appearance. Shawn
Benzeleski returned to action but was an early retiree during the
running of the feature. Thomas Laga made a return to the Junior
Slingshot wars in his pristine looking number 38 racer. Mark
Manieri, Jacob Severn, Larry Mekic and the Kunsman Family all
returned to speedway action but it was Kunsman Jr. capturing the
win being the highlight for all of the returning competitors. Pat
Collins, Al Kober and Donny Hockman all returned to the speedway
with Collins steering the Malson equipment, Hockman racing the
Whitaker car and Kober wheeling the

Ryan Greth
And Eddie Strada Share Hamlin Speedway Spotlight In
Saturday Night
Racing Action
by:
Steve Pados, GA
Motorsports Media
Ryan Greth and Eddie Strada became first time feature winners
while Paul Ennes,
Brian Gilmore and Kyle Rutldge added to their win totals in
the Saturday evening racing event at the Hamlin Speedway that was
marred by an end over end flip by rookie Mark Berkenstock early in
the evening and cast a somber note over the rest of the evening's
racing activities that curtailed two feature events due to the
lateness of the racing program. Berkenstock, the 2008 Junior
Slingshot division champion at the speedway, climbed over a wheel
in the fifth heat of the first round of the dual heat format and
launched into a series of hard end over end flips that jarred him
loose from his safety equipment when the race car finally came to
a rest. Berkenstock was attended to at the speedway and rushed to
a nearby hospital that in-turn had him transported to
Philadelphia
for emergency surgery for his injuries. No further details were
available at press time.
In the first ever HTMA 600 Pro Series event at the speedway, Jake
Murphy and Ryan Greth led the 25-car starting field down for the
start of the event. Murphy grabbed the lead and held it for the
first tour around the speedway. On the
second turn
of lap two it was Greth diving to the inside of the raceway and
heading down the backstretch with the lead with Murphy right
behind him. Two laps later it was Jeff Hartman taking over the
runner up spot from Murphy and taking up the chase to reel in
Greth. Brett Michalski, who started the event from sixth place
found a seam of the raceway he enjoyed and moved into the third
place with a pass of Murphy. Lapped cars came into play by the
midway point of the event but leader Greth had no problem in
moving past the slower race cars as the laps clicked off.
A caution for the spinning machine of Tyler Walton on lap-17
closed up the ranks on the event, but when the racing resumed it
was Greth as his best as he maintained a two to three car length
over Hartman for the remainder of the event. A caution/checkered
flag for the spinning Brendan Bright brought the race to a close
with Greth in for the win for his first career triumph at Hamlin
with Jeff Hartman finishing second in a great drive. Michalski was
the best of the Hamlin regulars with his third place finish with
Murphy hanging on for fourth despite being hounded by Brett Arndt
for the last half of the race.
Mike Rutherford, who came into the event as the number two
man in series points, enjoyed a sixth place finish and will take
over the point lead with his performance. Parker Evans, Brett
Schoenly, Brian Carber and Tim Buckwalter completed the top
finishers in the 30-lap event.
Eddie Strada, who recently began his racing career at Hamlin, took
the lead in the Junior Slingshot encounter as he went upstairs off
of turn two of the opening lap to take control of the event and go
on to record the first win of his budding racing career. Danny
Buccafusca was the runnerup with a late charge in the final stages
of the event from eighth starting spot. Dylan Martin was third
with Zack Weisenfluh fourth and Ricky Raisner completing the top
five.
Chris Kurtz,
AJ Tonkin, Tyler Dippel, Jenna Schostkewitz and the returning TJ
Lilly completed the top ten.
"The Branchville Bullet" Kyle Rutledge took the lead at the
opening bell and drove his Cambridge Sheet Metal/Winners Circle
BBQ sponsored racer to a wire to wire triumph in the rookie 270
Micro division event. Mick D'Agostino, Duane White, Austin Burke,
Glenn Macomber, Dave Seip and Cheyanne Schaffer completed the top
seven place finishers in the event.
Brian Gilmore led from start to finish in the rookie 600 Micro
event to narrowly defeat Joe Kata in the time shortened event. New
Englander Mick D'Agostino was third with fellow New Englander
Dylan Menditto returning to action to claim fourth place money and
Adam Lounsbury completing the top five running order.
Carbondale, Pennsylvania hot shoe Paul Ennes took control
of the Super Slinger feature event at the drop of the green flag
and went on to record another win at the Hamlin facility. In
recording the victory, Ennes broke his own track record for the
over 35-set as he established another track record enroot to
victory with a clocking of 13.856 seconds on a tour around the
raceway. Ennes dedicated his win to the injured Mark Berkenstock
in victory circle after the event. Defending track champion Dale
Kober was the runnerup with
Roger Collins
rim-riding to a third place finish and
Jimmy Johnston coming on strong to finish fourth and Henry
Anderson completing the top five in the division. Bob Clark drove
hard to claim sixth place with Dale Reed, Jerry Hughes, Lea Anna
Tonkin and Tommy Vroom Jr. completing the top ten
The 270 Micro and Regular Slingshot
features will be made up at a later date and drivers and race
teams are encouraged to view the speedway website at:
www.hamlinspeedways.com for
all scheduling changes.
46 of the 600 Wingless Micros signed in to do battle in event. The
dual heat format produced ten heats with Alex Curley,
Bobby Butler,
Joseph J Smith, Jeff Hartman and
Jesse Hartman
being victorious in the first set with Mike Rutherford, Jake
Murphy, Ryan Greth, Mark Gilmore and Brock Zearfoss claiming the
wins in set number two. Two B-Mains with four cars qualifying out
of each had Kyle Lick and Bobby Butler claiming the victories and
Shane Lewis being added as the Promoters Provisional to set the
25-car starting field for the feature event.
Junior Slingshot heats were won by Zack Weisenfluh and Eddie
Strada. The rookie 270 heat race was captured by Kyle Rutledge
with Joe Kata capturing the 600 heat event. Super Slinger heats
were won by Paul Ennes and
Jimmy Johnston
while 270 heat events were claimed by Mike Esposito, CJ Heinig and
Gene Burd. Justin Brewster, Jess Benke and Troy Langendorfer all
claimed wins for the Regular Slingshots.
In the course of the evening, Danny Buccafusca broke his track
record for the Junior Slingshot division when he stopped the
clocks at 14.386 seconds for a one lap tour around the racetrack.
Racing great Johnny Heydenreich was on hand to greet his many race
fans and do battle in the event and was thoroughly impressed with
the Hamlin facility in an interview with track announcer and good
friend Steve Pados. "The
Hot Rod" didn't fare as well on the speedway as he broke a
spindle in the
hot laps session and played catch-up with the quality field
on hand the remainder of the evening, although he enjoyed a great
run in the B-Main after becoming more familiar with the race car
as the evening wore on. Many thanks to Rob Warko and his group for
the loan of the race car to Johnnny and to Randy and
Ryan Smith for preparing the car for battle at the S&S
Speedway shops during the week
Miss WALN Cable Radio Vicky Kidd and
TV personality "Happy Jack" Burns were on hand for the special
event and greeted the great crowd on hand for the special show.
Video highlights of their first appearance at the speedway will be
shown on the Monday evening broadcast of the popular
CARQUEST Gasoline Alley TV/Internet Show hosted by Ed and
Steve Pados on Channels 103 and 137 as well as world-wide on the
net at:
www.walncableradio.com from
6 to 8 PM with a tape delay showing at 11 PM on Channel 50.
Accord Speedway Promoters Gary and Donna Palmer were on hand for
the event after suffering a cancellation the night before at their
speedway and Gary Palmer had the chance to interview with Pados
about the great
racing found at Hamlin and how he and his wife always enjoy
their visits to the Pocono race facility and of the extreme
dedication and hard work the Smith Family display with their race
track.

Hamlin
Speedway Overcomes Early Storm To Produce Great Night Of Racing
Action
by:
Steve Pados, GA
Motorsports Media
Throwing caution to the wind, Promoters Denise and Randy Smith
rolled the dice on Saturday evening and hit the jackpot with a
tremendous show that had the great crowd on hand heading home by
10:30pm. With another great seven division of field of talented
drivers on hand for the event, the eight feature program hustled
through the evening on a smooth, dust free racing surface that was
soaked by a quick-hitting shower before the spirited racing
kicked-off and then manicured to perfection by Randy Smith and the
talent deep Slingshot field that assisted in squeezing out the
excess moisture so the racing could begin.
In the headliner for the Regular Slingshots, Jessie Benke and John
Bockhorn brought the field down for the start of the 25-lap
encounter but a tap from the rear sent Bockhorn spinning around
and collecting a few cars before one turn could be completed. On
the restart, Benke powered out to the lead with "Mighty' Mike
Horton in tow. From ninth starting spot, Simon Egan was using a
combination of muscle and hustle to move through the field to
become a player in the event. Benke, in her first year of
Slingshot competition, was able to hold off the advances of Horton
early on and past the midway point of the event Egan was clearly
the fastest car
on the speedway surface. Egan became the runner up on lap-16 and
then took control of the point on lap-19 when Benke slid a bit out
of the groove. Once in front it was academic as Egan went on to
claim another win at the speedway in the remaining laps of the
event. Paul Ennes rallied hard late in the race to claim second
place with "The Mack Attack" Mack Brink charging from 18th
starting position to finish third in a stellar drive. "Iron" Mike
Butler had another fantastic run at the speedway from 12th
starting spot to claim fourth place and Troy Langendorfer remained
solid throughout to finish fifth. Jess Benke, Nick Snyder,
Shannon Smith,
Jimmy Johnston
and Kyle Rutledge completed the top ten.
The Rookie
600 Wingless Micro stars had the "Goshen Gladiator" Joe Kata drive
away from the field at the start and then hold off the advances of
the "Wild Child"
Brian Gilmore in the late stages of the event to claim
another victory at the speedway. Gilmore was the runner up with
newcomer Buddy Effrig in third place, Josh Winters in fourth and
Cody Smith rounding out the top five finishers.
The Rookie 270 Micros saw the "Branchville Bullet" Kyle Rutldege
take command at the start of the event and drive away from the
field to claim the win in a wire to wire triumph. Mick D'Agostino,
Jeffrey Anderson, Hayden Miller and newcomer Sheldon Iudicello
completed the top five.
Super Slinger feature action had pointman Paul Ennes driving away
from the field early on but hard charging Henry Anderson kept
sight of him past the midway point of the race. A lap 16 caution
brought the field back together and when the green flag was
displayed once again,
Anderson
charged around Ennes to take control of the event and go on to
capture the feature win. Ennes was the runner up with Tom Arntz in
third and the Henneforth Brothers Mark and Aaron completing the
top five.
The 270 Micro feature had
Meriden, Connecticut
's CJ Heinig blast into the lead at the start of the event to go
and claim his first Hamlin Speedway victory in his racing career.
Heining was up to the task as he held off defending track champion
Nunzi Allegrucci from the tenth lap on to enjoy the sweet glory of
the win in victory circle. Allegrucci was the runner up with Gene
Burd grabbing a podium finish and Matt Mounz and Darin Batholomew
completing the top five.
The Junior Slingshot encounter had twelve hot dogs take the green
flag even though a National tour race was taking place elsewhere.
Kody Welsh was the early leader and on lap-4 coasted his car to
the infield with motor woes. AJ Tonkin assumed control of the lead
and led up until lap-14 when the "Rockaway Rocket" Danny
Buccafusca arrived at the scene to grab the lead and go on to
record another Hamlin Speedway win to his racing resume. Tonkin
was the runner up with newcomer Eddie Strada continuing to impress
with a third place finish and Zack Weisenfluh and Ricky Raisner
competing the top five.
The 600 Wingless main event proved to be the Gary Berkenstock show
as the Green Lane , Pennsylvania resident drove away at the start
of the 25-lap main event to claim his first win of the season in
highly competitive and exciting event. Stan "The Man" Tykarski was
the runner up with "The Minuteman" Alex Curly driving to a third
place finish. "The Conductor"
Bobby Butler
drove the wheels off of his machine from 10th place to finish
fourth and rookie Geordan Farry continued her great work at the
speedway to finish fifth. Defending track champion Mark Gilmore,
Billy Clark,
Jerry Mack, Shelby Harper and Kyle "The Hot" Lick completed the
top ten running order.
In the make-up Regular Slingshot feature from May 8th, "Double J"
Jimmy Johnston grabbed the lead at the drop of the green and led
all laps to claim the win and close the show on Saturday night.
Paul Ennes was the second place man with Nathan "The Wild Wild"
West in for third in a great drive. Dale Kober was fourth and
Jessie Benke completed the top five. Kyle "The Hot Rod" Rode, Mack
Brink, Simon Egan, Kyle Rutledge and Rich Van Orden completed the
top ten finishers.
While most of the tracks in the tri-state area remained dark on
Saturday evening, the Smith team threw down the gauntlet to
produce another exciting evening of racing action. While the rain
storm that quickly raced through the area dropped a ton
of moisture on the racing surface, the great efforts of the track
crew and the Slingshot drivers produced a very racy track
throughout the evening of hard fought competition.
A
hair raising incident occurred on lap one of the rookie 600
Wingless Micro heat event when Brian Gilmore found the room off of
turn two to pull alongside of Ryan Wood with Wood pinching Gilmore
up on the Jersey barriers. Gilmore rode the barriers showing the
bottom side of his race car to the grandstand section with Wood
riding up over Gilmore's left front wheel and executing a series
of flips that sent the "Rocketman" skyward and hard into the
Hamlin catch fence. Neither driver was injured in the scary ordeal
although both cars needed repair to embark on further competition.
Gilmore later came back to score a second place in the Rookie main
event and Wood later returned to the speedway after the racing
action was completed to test his racer for the following week. It
was great effort on the part of the track crew to extract the
racer from its perch on top of the safety barriers.
Rick Raisner Sr. made his return to the racing was aboard the
Ricky Yetter owned Slingshot and was 13th in the final rundown of
the Super Slinger main event. Raisner pounded the dirt tracks for
many a season before turning over the driving chores to his son
Ricky. Former ARDC racer Tim Townsend returned to the speedway for
the first time in a year driving the Winters owned 600 and was
scored in 19th in the final box score of the event. Chris Stockham
had the National Parts Peddler 600 Micro back in action but was an
early retiree from the feature event. Jerry Mack returned to
the racing wars after testing the waters at another speedway and
came away with an 8th place finish in the main event.
Billy Clark, the speedway champion in the Slingshot ranks, had the
misfortune of having the steering wheel come off during the heat
racing action and quick reaction on his part had him stay out of
harms way but bringing out the caution while he was riding in the
runner up slot.
Heat racing action was exciting with Bobby Butler, Stan Tykarski
and Billy Clark all scoring wins in the 600's. Troy Langendorfer,
Paul Ennes and Justin Brewster captured wins in the Slingshots and
Joe Kata and Kyle Rutledge winning preliminaries for the Rookie
classes. Jimmy Johnston and Paul Ennes secured Super Slinger wins
and Junior action saw Kody Welsh and Jenna Schostkewitz claiming
the heat race wins. Rick Cascario and Brandon Edgar captured the
270 Micro heat wins.

Speedway
Racers Provide The Fireworks With Tremendous Holiday Show On Weis
Supermarkets Night
by:
Steve Pados, GA
Motorsports Media
Fabulous weather in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania paved the
way for a spectacular night of tremendous racing excitement at the
Hamlin Speedway on Saturday evening.
With 136
entries that included forty of the top Slingshot drivers in the
United States today, Speedway Promoters Denise and Randy Smith
greeted a standing room only crowd with a show that will be talked
about for some time to come. When the racing action was complete,
the noted phrase "the cream rises to the top" quickly surfaces to
describe the on track action with the seven divisions that took to
the racy 1/5 mile speed bowl. With Weis Supermarkets serving as
the headline sponsor for the evening's events, the heated racing
action at Hamlin has made the facility one of the top
establishments for small car division racing in the country today.
Pennsylvanian Simon Egan and New Yorker Vinny Zazzero brought the
31-car starting field down for the start of the 100-lap Hamlin
Hundred. Egan, who had already captured one big event at the
speedway earlier in the season, drove off to a five car
length advantage with Justin Brewster and Zazzero duking it out
for the runner up role. As the laps clicked off, Brewster was
flexing his muscles as he broke away from Zazzero and began
attacking Egan. The action at mid pack was sensational as none of
the drivers were sharing a dime as they worked their way forward.
From ninth starting spot defending track champion, "The
Factoryville Flyer" Billy Clark began to make his presence known
as did "The Dirt Diva" Shannon Smith, Dale Kober, Jimmy Johnston
from 21st starting position and "Iron" Mike Butler from 23rd
position.
At the midway point of the event the talent was as thick as pea
soup and just as good throughout the pack. Egan couldn't shake the
presence of Brewster as the opening night winner at the speedway
began to stick the nose of his racer under Egan. As the pair
negotiated the heavy traffic, Clark was able to sneak by Smith and
a couple of laps later was able to drive by Brewster who appeared
to be slowing as the laps rolled on. Lap-64 proved to be the
critical moment of the event as Clark drove under Egan in traffic
and the pair of warriors connected with Clark coming away with the
lead and Smith being able to hustle her hot pink machine under
Egan on the next go around. One lap later the incredible drive
from Brewster came to a halt with motor woes and
lap-88 had guaranteed starter Kyle Heiber see his left rear wheel
pass him by as he snapped the drive axle on his mount.
While Clark and Smith ran first and second, Dale Kober drove by
Egan when he slipped up on the race track but Egan regained the
spot a couple of laps later with a splendid pass off of the top of
turn two. A late caution as the great ride by Butler came to a
halt when he stalled on the race track, allowed Smith one last
opportunity to make her way past Clark but it was the shining
moment for Clark as he powered away to claim the $1,500.00 prized
posted by the Smith Family. Shannon Smith was the runner up with
Simon Egan in third place and Dale Kober fourth in the century
grind with Russell Benke completing the top five. Vinny Zazzero,
Jimmy Johnston, Richie Van Orden, Ben Whitaker and hard riding
Bobby Van Blarcom completed the top ten. Fifteen cars completed
the 100-lap distance in the event.
In 270 Micro action, newcomer Brandon Edgar grabbed the lead at
the start of the event with Gene Burd in tow. The race came to a
halt on lap-3 when hard charging Robbie Watson climbed a wheel in
turn one and set sail out of the racing arena. Within a few
minutes of the scary incident, Watson emerged from the clump of
bushes outside of the raceway and ran the entire length of the
backstretch amidst a standing ovation from the capacity crowd who
may have witnessed the first sighting of a race car leaving the
Hamlin facility the hard way.
When the racing resumed it was Edgar back in front with Burd being
as tenacious as possible. The 17th-lap saw Edgar slide a bit out
of the groove and Burd pulling even and winning the drag race down
the backstretch into turn three. Once in front, Burd led the
remaining laps to claim the win over Edgar, who has been such a
welcome addition the weekly racing roster. Nunzi Allegrucci was
third with the returning Ed Kenderdine in fourth and Connecticut
invader CJ Heinig completing the top five.
Tony Iudicello grabbed the lead at the frop of the green flag in
the 600 Wingless Micro headliner and was pressured by Brittany
Tresch and Kyle Lick in the early laps of the event. Lick brought
out the caution a few laps into the event when he got into turn
one too hot and looped his racer. On the restart it was Iudicello
at the point but Tresch was showing the nose of her race car every
chance she got. A restart on lap-17 gave Tresch a shot at glory.
Iudicello led lap-18 but Tresch was putting tremendous pressure on
him and one lap later took control of the lead as Iudicello had
his machine go sour and he pulled in to the pit area. Tresch went
on to win the event with Keith McIntyre putting it all together to
claim runner up money. Connecticut 's Jonathan Hull was third with
Shelby Harper in fourth and "The Conductor" Bobby Butler riding
from 19th place to complete the top five. Not to be overlooked,
Parker Evans drove his racer from 27th starting position to claim
sixth place in an amazing run at the speedway.
Jacob Dunn and Matthew Gaughan brought the stars of tomorrow at
Hamlin down for the start of the Junior Slingshot main attraction.
Gaughan grabbed the early lead with Dunn taking up the chase. Five
laps into the event, Dunn found the fast line and slipped by
Gaughan to take over the lead. Dunn withstood a late charge by
Danny Buccafusca to win his first ever event at the speedway.
Buccafusca was the runnerup and in doing so broke the track record
he held for the one lap mark as he lowered the standard to a new
14.386 seonds for a one lap tour. Taylor Eccles late charge netted
him a third place finish in a great drive with Ricky Raisner
overcoming an early spin to go hands up on the wheel and drive
back to a solid fourth place finish. Newcomer Eddie Strada
continues to impress with a top five finish in his third outing
and Matthew Gaughan claiming the sixth place prize.
The Super Slingers once again proved to be the Paul Ennes show as
he led all laps of the feature and in the process claimed a new
track record for the Super Slingers with a clocking of 13.873
seconds for a lap around the Hamlin oval. Dale Kober was second
with Roger Collins, Henry Anderson and Jimmy Johnston completing
the top five in the quickly paced event.
The rookie 270 Micro encounter was a two story saga with Mick
D'Agostino leading the first twelve laps before yielding to New
Yorker Jeffrey Anderson. Anderson led the remaining laps to win
his second event of the season with D'Agostino in the runner up
slot. Kyle Rutledge drove from 9th spot to finish in third and
David Ahner and Missi Seip completed the top five finishing spots.
Brian Gilmore
led the first laps of the rookie 600 Wingless 20 lapper and gave
way to Joe Kata on lap three. The remainder of the event mirrored
the same edition of the race they enjoyed one week ago and once
again it was Kata claiming the win with Gilmore in the runner up
spot and Ryan Wood claiming third place money. Dylan Menditto made
his first appearance of the season and he came with two hot rods
for the 270 and 600 racing action and was fourth in this one with
Cody Smith completing the top five.
Noted invaders for the event included "The Negotiator" Ricky
Yetter, who was coming off an interview on the CARQUEST Gasoline
Alley TV Show after his big win at the Shellhamers event and a
following 358 Modified win at the Big Diamond Raceway. Yetter
found the sledding tough as he dropped out on lap-46 and credited
with a 23rd place finish. Will Eastman was a guaranteed
starter for the event and just took the initial green flag in the
qualifying events and quickly slipped back into the pit area.
Billowing smoke from his race car had him exit the main event on
lap-34. Gary Heiber tried to over-correct his machine on lap-25 of
the feature and found himself connecting with the unforgiving
Jersey Barriers on the homestretch resulting in an early
dismissal. Mike Horton made his second appearance of the season
and was the Promoter's option for the event and raced among the
leaders until getting turned around late in the race. Kevin and
Steven Van Valkenburg made their first appearances at Hamlin in
many a moon and Kevin raced to a 12th place finish in the main
event. Steve Intravaia was a guest driver in one of the Clark
entries and and was 13th in the main event. Current National
Slingshot Champion "The Bangor Renegade" Cody Kline continues to
have the year from hell as he was sidelined on lap-84 after
running with the leaders most of the event. His teammate Billy
"The Dream" Weaver made his first Hamlin appearance of the season
and didn't make the final transfer into the main event. JR Fulper
was also an early retiree in the event.
Frank Jarkiewitz and Jake Muench were newcomers for the 600
Wingless racing. Ashley Sullivan made her first appearance in the
Junior Slingshot division. Brendan Finley was also a first time
performer in the former Kyle Van Duser slinger out of New York
State .
Dual heats were the order of the day for the Slingers and produced
some great racing action as each resembled a mini feature event.
Winners included, Simon Egan, Ben Whitaker, Justin Brewster and
Vinny Zazzero in the first set and John Pantis, Cody Kline,
Russell Benke and Roger Collins in the second set. Kevin Van
Valkenburg captured the B-Main.
Additional heat winners included Brian Gilmore in the Rookie 600's
and Mick D'Agostino in the Rookie 270's. 600 Wingless heat were
captured by Bobby Butler, Shelby Harper and Brittany Tresch. Super
Slinger heats were won by Tom Arntz and Jimmy Johnston. Matthew
Gaughan and Jacob Dunn were Junior Slingshot heat winners. 270
Micro heat winners were Nunzi Allegrucci, Kurt Bettler and Jevon
Ahner.
The first promotion with the Weis Supermarkets chain was
outstanding. The 165 store chain has two supermarkets operating in
Hamlin and employs nearly 17,000 people within the five state
area. An additional promotion will be on tap for July 31st.
Twenty tickets were given away for the July 31st Pocono
International Speedway event. Through the courtesy of Redemption
Racing, Camel Beach tickets were awarded and additionally on the
Hamlin grounds, members of the Redemption Racing Team conducted
face painting for the youngsters and proved to be very popular for
the kids.
It was great to see Mike Horton Sr. back at the speedway. Mike has
had some significant hospital stays of late and the former head
wrench man with "AJ Slideways" Alan Johnson seemed to enjoy
watching his son back in racing form at the Hamlin track.

Hamlin Speedway Sidesteps Mother Nature To Complete A Great Eight
Feature Show
by:
Steve Pados, GA
Motorsports Media
Turning a
negative into a positive, the hard working Hamlin Speedway staff
took full advantage of some assistance from Mother Nature to
overcome a rain delay, whip the speedway back into excellent
working order and complete the eight feature program before a
jam-packed, wet but loyal fan base who braved the quick hitting
storm to witness another excellent evening of exciting racing
action in the Pocono Mountains. With another 135 plus entries
piled into the pit area, the racing action on the speedway was
superb and will serve as the ignition for the upcoming
"Firecracker Hamlin Hundred" unfolding at the speedway this coming
Saturday evening on July 3rd and will pay out a healthy $2,000.00
to the winner based on a 45 car entry field. The event will be the
fourth annual running of the premier show and the Sunbury,
Pennsylvania based Weis Markets supermarket chain has come on
board to serve as the headline sponsor for the prestigious event.
The show
kicked off with the running of the 270 Micro Sprint feature event
that had been on hold since May 8th. The event carried a winner's
share of $750.00 on the line and the action was hot and heavy
throughout the event but proved to be a star maker for young
Austin Burke as he took the lead at the drop of Russ Furry's green
flag to out-power defending track champion Nunzi Allegrucci into
turn one. The Saylorsburg resident may have wavered a few times
throughout the event but kept his heavy right foot on the throttle
of his Burke's Trucking sponsored mount to lead the
entire distance and pick up the big cash money. Allegrucci tried
every trick he knew but settled for a hard fought runner up slot.
Gene Burd remained close throughout to finish third and Kurt
Bettler and Robbie Watson completed the top five.
Jenna
Schostkewitz and newcomer Eddie Strada brought the field down for
the start of the Junior Slingshot headliner and it was
Schostkewitz who powered away at the start with Strada close
behind. Junior Slingshot local area feature event winners Dylan
Martin and Danny Buccafusca were flexing their racing muscles
behind the pair and began to search the speedway racing lines to
move forward. Schostkewitz led up until lap-5 when she gave way to
the "Rockaway Rocket" Danny Buccafusca as he powered off the
bottom of turn two to take control of the point. With a clear
track in front of him, Buccafusca opened up some big distance
between he and the rest of the field in his Bruce's Speed Shop
sponsored mount. "Thrillin" Dylan Martin moved in to second place
but could not overcome the big advantage held by Buccafusca and
finished in the runnerup slot in his Mark Gray Automotive hot rod.
"The Midget" Chris Kurtz was third with Kody Welsh, Tyler Dippel,
Ricky Rasiner and Eddie Strada following.
The 270
Micro Sprint rookies had recent arrival to the speedway, Lehighton
resident David Ahner leading the first nine laps of the event.
Burke completed the pass of Ahner on lap-10 to race on and record
his second feature win of the evening. Ahner was the runnerup with
Orwigsburg's Cheyanne Schaffer in third place another fast female
Missi Seip finishing fourth in her first speedway appearance.
Jeffrey Anderson completed the top five running order.
Rookie 600
Wingless Micro action found "The Goshen Gladiator" Joe Kata
jumping out front at the start of the event. Mechanical gremlins
found newcomer Josh Winters, Ryan Wood and Mark Berkestock all
falling out before the halfway mark. What was to follow was
textbook Hamlin 101 as Kata and the "New Wild Child" Brian Gilmore
became locked in a dual that had the young warriors dicing it out
a fifth of a mile at a time for ten laps much to the delight of
the crowd. Kata was the winner in his Showalter's Equipment speed
buggy with Gilmore just a tick behind in his Pub 199/PMZ
Landscaping machine.
The regular
270 Micro event proved to the frosting on the cake for track
champion Nunzi Allegrucci. The Scranton resident took the lead at
the drop of the green and wired the field despite repeated efforts
by Wapwallopen speedster Gene Burd to dislodge him from the
point. Allegrucci came across the winner with Burd in second place
with a great performance and the returning Hamburg resident Ed
Kenderdine in for a solid third place performance. "The Boss" Ross
Perchak was third in his Perchak Trucking rocket and Rob Pajauis
completed the top five.
Super
Slinger action found "Double J" Jimmy Johnston taking full
advantage of a front row starting spot to drive his Chestnut Hill
Trailers sponsored Slinger to a wire to wire triumph despite a
late charge from Carbondale gunslinger Paul Ennes. Aaron
Henneforth was third in his newly purchased race car and Tommy
Vroom Jr was fourth in his Priority Appraisal sponsored machine.
Hard driving Henry Anderson completed the top five.
The always
entertaining 600 Wingless Micros took to the speedway and the "Belvidere
Bullet" Jeff Schall seemingly had things going his way for the
first dozen laps of the event. As Schall was approaching lapped
traffic, "Penndel Peddler" Brett Michalski closed quickly on
Schall and the pair drove into turn one with Michalski in the lead
and Schall spinning his racer around and bringing a caution to the
field. On the restart, Michalski wasted no time in building up a
big advantage over rookie 600 campaigner "The Minuteman from
Massachusetts" Alex Curley and go on for the win over Curley.
Curley did a great job in claiming runner up money as he held off
the advances of Kyle "The Hot" Lick who fell back a few spots at
the beginning of the event and peddled his way back to claim third
place. Brittany Tresch was fourth in a great drive and "The
Conductor" Bobby Butler raced hard from start to finish to round
out the top five.
Russell
Benke drove his Jordan Towing sponsored machine to his first win
in the Regular Slingshot main event. Benke, a second year
performer, was in command from the start and was flawless in
performance as he bested 28 of the finest Slingshot campaigners in
the country to claim the victory. Former Hamlin track champion as
well as National Slingshot champion "The Eynon Aggressor" Ben
Whitaker claimed runnerup honors with "The Wild, Wild West" Nathan
West racing to a solid third place. Rookie Slingshot campaigner
"The Electric Man" Colin White was fourth and the "Branchville
Bullet" Kyle Rutledge completed the top five.
POCO-NOTES:
The quick
hitting rainstorm once again showed the perseverance of the Hamlin
staff and the great racers who compete there. Once the rain
ceased, the Hamlin crew quickly went to work on the speedway and a
tip of the fedora to all of the Slingshot drivers who went "muddin"
to help whip the track back into racing condition. The rain helped
add a third lane to the racing surface and the drivers were quick
to take advantage of the additional real estate afforded to them.
Heat racing
action at Hamlin has always proved to be like mini-feature events
and last night was no exception to the rule. Jenna Schostkewitz
and Eddie Strada were heat winners and in the first heat, Danny
Buccafusca established a new track record for the Juniors at
14.466 seconds per lap. The win for Strada is even more amazing
due to the fact he was competing in only his second race since the
purchase of the race car from Aaron Henneforth. Mark Berkenstock
was the winner of the 600 Wingless rookie heat event. Troy
Langendorfer, Nathan West and Ben Whitaker claimed wins in the
Regular Slingshot heats that also saw Cuddebackville, New York
racer Mike Horton make his start of the season at Hamlin. Newcomer
David Ahner captured the heat win for the 270 Micro rookies. 600
Wingless Micro heats were claimed by Alex Curley, Brett Michalski
and Bobby Butler and Super Slinger heats went to Tommy Vroom and
Dale Kober. Vroom broke the existing track record for the Super
Slingers in his heat as he lowered the new standard to 13.928
seconds. Four heats were required for the 270 Micros and the
winners were Gene Burd, Nunzi Allegrucci, "Hurricane" Harlee
Schaffer and Ed Kenderdine. Two consolation events were required
and Rob Pajauis and Jamie Czekai claimed the wins.
Fast time
awards for the initial event of the Micro feature were put by
Dickie Keiper Racing Supplies and Gene Burd set the fast time and
was awarded $50.00 for his efforts. Second fast timer Robbie
Watson and third place man Todd Bertrand each claimed $25.00
prizes for their efforts.
Despite the
fact the PA Speedweeks began for the 600's, another great field of
racers were on hand for the event showing the evidence of the
growing strength of non-wing racing in the Eastern portion of the
country.
Weis
Supermarkets has been operating successful grocery stores in a
five state area since 1912. The Sunbury based retailer has grown
to 165 stores since the purchase of the Mr Z's and King's
Supermarkets in the late 90's and owns another 30 stores under the
pet theme name of Superpetz. With many in-house labels such as
Weis Quality, From the Field, Big Top, Carnival and Dutch Valley,
Weis Markets has grown to be among the leaders in the vast
supermarket industry today. Weis employs 16,600 people and the
strong community ties have developed the sponsorship support and
opportunities for the Hamlin Speedway. Through the sponsorship,
there will be bike giveaways and face painting and an opportunity
to win race tickets to the upcoming ARCA event at the Pocono
International Speedway. Megan Ammirato has helped develop the
partnership the speedway hopes will be in place for many years to
come. For more information regarding Weis Markets, logon to their

Ten Features + 150
Entries + Packed House Equals Winning Formula For Success At
Hamlin Speedway
by:
Steve Pados, GA
Motorsports Media
The warmth of the summer sun in the Pocono Mountains gave way to
the heat of 150 ground pounding race cars that converged into the
stuffed pit area of the Hamlin Speedway on Saturday evening. After
a week off due to inclement weather, the Smith Family was able to
get back on track and present another banner night of racing for
the packed house of eager racing fans who came out to see
their racing heroes perform on the well groomed 1/5 mile speedway.
Playing catch-up from some postponed races from back on May 8th,
the well-trained speedway staff was able to present the entire
regular show of seven feature events plus three make-up events and
complete the exciting show by 10:36 PM.
The Super Slingers got the ball rolling right away with their
makeup event and Aaron Henneforth in his Salentari Fuels sponsored
machine was able to lead the first lap before giving way to the
"Oxford Express" Dale Kober. The defending track champion showed
the hot hand as he built up a big lead at times and led the
remaining 24-laps to claim another win at the speedway. Henry
Anderson provided a late charge that fell a bit short as he landed
in the runner up role with Aaron Henneforth, Jimmy Johnston and
Paul Ennes completing the top five.
After a series of heat events for all of the divisions, the parade
of feature headliners that were to follow all proved to have their
own theatrics as some new winners were added to the already big
list of Hamlin winners for the 2010 racing season. The always
exciting "Stars of Tomorrow", the Junior Slingshots took to the
speedway and Jenna Schostkewitz led the event into the first two
turns before yielding to the "Midget" Chris Kurtz as he found a
hot line off the bottom of the raceway to pull up even and then
grab the lead by the time the field hit turn three. By lap three,
"The Code Man" Kody Welsh began to chip away at the Kurtz lead and
at times was able to stick the nose of his race car under Kurtz.
The second year racer Kurtz held his ground and was able
to capture the win over Welsh with Zack Weisenfluh third, Danny
Buccafusca fourth and Ricky Raisner rounding out the top five.
Rhett Long took the lead at the start of the Rookie 600 Wingless
Micro event and never looked back as led all of the 20 laps of the
event to claim his first win of the season at Hamlin. Ryan Wood,
Joe Kata, Brian Gilmore and Ed Jones completed the top five
running order. The Rookie 270 Micros had first time Hamlin visitor
Luke Kroboth grab the lead at the start of the event and seemingly
be on his way to an easy victory as he led the first twelve laps
of the feature. Getting into lapped traffic, Kroboth slowed his
pace and 8th place starting Dan Souder gained ground quickly on
Kroboth. Kroboth got into the turn one too hot and began to spin
but saved the car but before he could correct fully Souder had
gone by and was now the point man as the laps wound down. Souder
went on to claim the victory with David Ahner second, Jeffrey
Anderson third, Luke Kroboth fourth and Brian White completing the
top five.
The "Connecticut Peddler" Todd Bertrand was making a rare Hamlin
start but just may stick around a bit longer after driving his K&N
Filter/Alex Lemonade sponsored 270 Micro to a convincing win in
the 25-lap feature for the winged warriors. Bertrand was flawless
in his performance as led every lap on his way to victory. Mike
Esposito put plenty of pressure on Bertrand throughout the event
but Bertrand was dead on with his setup as he mastered the Hamlin
clay cushion. Esposito enjoyed a great run to land in the runner
up spot with the "Dirt Diva" Shannon Smith doing an excellent job
in a borrowed ride to finish third. Robbie Watson was fourth from
eleventh starting place and Rick Cascario completed the top five.
"Double J" Jimmy Johnston took advantage of a rare front row
starting spot to take the lead at the start of the regularly
scheduled Super Slinger feature and proceed to break the track
record on lap four of the event for the division. Paul Ennes, who
was the previous record holder, took up the chase and began to
reel in Johnston and in doing so established another new track
record in the process. Ennes's bid fell a bit short as it was
Johnston claiming the victory with Ennes a close second and Henry
Anderson rallying late to claim third place money. Tom Arntz and
Richie Van Orden completed the top five, with the event being the
first for Van Orden in the Super Slingers as his recent birthday
made him eligible for the over 35 group of stars at the speedway.
Keith McIntyre took off at the start of the 600 Wingless feature
and appeared to have the muscle early on to romp to victory. With
a few restarts that slowed the pace of the event, McIntyre was
able to maintain the lead as he held off the advances of Stan "The
Man" Tykarski, Mark Gilmore, Geordan Farry and "The Conductor"
Bobby Butler. McIntyre began to slow a bit with his lap times and
both Butler and Gilmore were getting better by the lap. Gilmore
threaded the needle as he used a patented "Ryan Smith type" move
in turn one to race up on the cushion and drive off of turn two to
pull even with Tykarski. Tykarski held his line but Gilmore
switched lanes again to drive into second place. Gilmore caught
McIntyre and as he completed the pass the McIntyre hot rod pulled
up lame, requiring a tow from the speedway. On the restart,
Gilmore had to contend with Butler and the pair raced each other
clean and green with Gilmore prevailing with another victory at
the speedway. Butler was in for a well earned second place finish
and Tykarski was third in another great run. Billy Clark, who
keeps getting better and better in his rookie 600 season, was
fourth and another rookie Geordan Farry completed the top five in
her best drive to date.
Troy Langendorfer took the early lead in the Regular Slingshot
headliner. A couple of restarts slowed the pace but Langendorfer
held his ground as he fought off the advances of the quick Simon
Egan. On lap six, Egan drove off the bottom of turn two and made
heavy contact with Langendorfer to gain control of the lead.
Before Langendorfer could recover, he lost a couple more spots to
Kyle Rutledge and Colin White. Once in front, Egan blistered the
Hamlin oval and moved out to a huge advantage over the rest of the
field. Paul Ennes, who started tenth, was on the move and quickly
disposed of those in front of him to set sail after Egan.
Langendrofer saw his great ride end on lap twenty as he coasted to
a stop in turn one. On the restart, Egan was hard on the pedal and
raced away to a small advantage over Ennes and went on to claim
the win with Ennes in second, Shannon Smith in a great drive from
eleventh to finish third, Kyle Rutledge in fourth and Vinny
Zazzero claiming fifth after starting from 12th position.
The Rookie 600 Micro makeup event proved to be the Joe Kata Show
as the youngster grabbed the lead at the opening bell and led all
of the laps to claim another victory at the Hamlin oval. Mark
Berkenstock made a late race pass to finish in the runner up spot
with Rhett Long in third, Ryan Wood in fourth and Brian Gilmore
settling for fifth place money.
The show closer was the 270 Rookie Micro makeup event. "Hurricane
Harlee" Schaffer took the lead at the drop of the green flag and
raced out to a comfortable advantage by the halfway point of the
event. Just after the halfway mark, Schaffer's car coasted to a
halt ending her bid for another Hamlin win. Port Crane, New York
's "The Warrior" Jeffrey Anderson took over the lead at that point
and raced to his second win of the season at Hamlin. John Vreeland
was second with Kyle Rutledge, Glenn Macomber and Cheyanne
Schaffer completing the top five.
J&J Road, the road leading into the Hamlin track, was bustling
with activity as the great number of entries created some traffic
congestion before the racing began. The racing began on time and
the staff kept moving the program along swiftly as a couple of
breaks were taken to add mositure to the track surface and keep
the race track racy throughout the evening.
Heat race wins were claimed by Jenna Schostkewitz and Chris Kurtz
in the Junior Slingshots. Rhett Long prevailed in the 600 Rookie
Wingless heat event. The 270 Micros featured three heats with
Robbie Watson, Jacob Hendershot and Jamie Czekai claiming wins.
Super Slinger heats went to Dale Kober and Paul Ennes. 600
Wingless Micro heats were claimed by Geordan Farry, Brett
Michalski and Billy Clark. Rookie 270 Micro heats were won by Kyle
Rutledge and Luke Kroboth. Slingshot heats saw Troy Langendorfer,
Simon Egan and opening night winner Justin Brewster claiming
victories.
New cars continue to arrive at the speedway and one in particular
is a legendary name along the Route 6 corridor. Eddie Strada made
his debut in racing aboard a former Aaron Henneforth machine and
the youngster kept out of trouble as he learns the art of the
racing game. The third generation driver scored a top ten finish
in his maiden voyage aboard the familiar signature numbered 42
Sharkey's Fuel sponsored race car. The Strada name featured Ed
Strada Sr and Jr as they both were multi-time driving champions
and big winners up the road at the now defunct Lake Mocatek
Speedway and many other venues in the Southern Tier region.
Strada's Nephew Kevin Bates has gained notoriety in the Modified
ranks in the past few years and is now doing his racing
activity at the Five Mile Point Speedway in Kirkwood , New York
where he is among the top five in points.
Dylan Martin made his first appearance in a few weeks and
registered a 6th place in the Jr Slingshot event. Hayden Miller
was a first time performer in the 270 ranks and got upside down in
heat racing action but later returned for the feature events. Dan
Souder's first visit netted him a victory in the main event that
also seen Jevon, Jared and David Ahner get some track time at
Hamlin with David getting the runner up finish to Souder and Jared
getting on his side after contact with the Jersey Barriers. Roger
Guest took the Rutledge racer to the track in the Supers and
scored a seventh place finish in his first Hamlin racing action.
Amanda Quinones was aboard the 00 car usually handled by brother
Ben. Charlie Shaver had a fresh paint job on the racer he bought
from former competitor John Wesp. Mike Butler made an appearance
at Hamlin for the first time in quite awhile and the "Ironman"
scored an 11th place finish in the main showing he hasn't lost his
touch in the Slingshot division. Bad luck continues to plague the
Nathan "Wild Wild" West as it was reported the team suffered a
broken crankshaft, the same problem that beset National Slingshot
Champion Cody Kline in his last Hamlin appearance. Jerry Mack
returned to action after a few weeks off but retired as the
feature event was lining up. Plainfield Township resident Tony
Iudicello also returned to action and he scored a tenth place
finish in the 600 action.

Exciting 5th Annual Two Day Sizzler Fires Up Hamlin Speedway
Racing Weekend
by:
Steve Pados, GA
Motorsports Media
The Promotional Team of Denise and Randy Smith rocked the Pocono
Mountains of Pennsylvania with their 5th Annual two day Spring
into Summer Sizzler over the past weekend at the Hamlin Speedway
located near the junction of Routes 191 and 590 in Hamlin ,
Pennsylvania. For the Smith Family, who have long standing ties
with the racing community, the two day event proved to be
the icing on the cake for their promotional efforts as they took
over the shuttered Hamlin facility in 2006 and through hard work
and vision and a dedicated work force, the speedway has been
resurrected into one of the top speedways in the country for small
division racing action. The two day event brought out 98
competitors on Friday evening and added another 126 for the
Saturday night finale and had an additional twelve members from
various NASCAR crews on hand to close the show with an
entertaining shoot-out for the Hamlin Speedway bragging rights.
The now famous picnic, a bonfire and the exciting on track action
provided lots of spark throughout the weekend as the Speedway
action was halted temporarily by a powerful quick hitting rain
storm that had the speedway crew spring into action with the help
of the 600 wingless Micro Division to whip the track back into
shape in no time flat.
The makeup feature for the Junior Slingshot racers from May 29th
kicked off the main events. Matthew Gaughan and Ricky Rasiner were
having a classic dual for the lead that ended up with the racers
coming together and both being sent to the rear. AJ Tonkin took
advantage of the situation and went on to record his first career
win at Hamlin Speedway in an emotional ceremony in victory lane.
Danny Buccafusca was the runner up with Chris Kurtz, Kody Welsh
and Jacob Dunn completing the top five. Joe Kata III was hard on
the hammer as he wired the field in the Rookie 600 Wingless Micro
battle with Mark Berkenstock, Jessica Moyer and Ryan Wood
following.
"Flyin" Ryan Smith captured the 270 Micro main as toured the
facility in 11.587 seconds to win over Robbie Watson, Rob Pajauis,
Rick Cascario and Joe Smith. Dale Kober captured the Super Slinger
event in a tight battle with Paul Ennes. Tom Arntz, Jimmy Johnston
and Dale Reed completed the top five. Shannon Smith captured the
Regular Slingshot main event after a tight race with Dale Kober.
Paul Ennes was third with Jimmy Johnston and Billy Clark
completing the top five.
In 600 Wingless Micro action, Bobby Butler and Ryan Smith along
with Brett Michalski and Parker Evans kept the racing action tight
and close as slide jobs and side by side racing action prevailed
in a great event for the popular division. "The Conductor" Bobby
Butler was the winner with Ryan Smith, Brett Michalski, Parker
Evans and Alex Curley competing the top five. In the regularly
scheduled attraction for the Junior Slingshots, Danny Buccafusca
came in for the win over Matthew Gaughan, Chris Kurtz, Ricky
Raisner and Kody Welsh .

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The speedway swung back into action on Saturday night with the top
four finishers from Friday being locked into the main events for
Saturday evening. The Junior Slingshots opened the feature event
action with Ricky Raisner using the top side of the raceway to
take the lead at the opening bell. Raisner was quick at the point
and moved way from the field early on in the event. Chris Kurtz
and Danny Buccafusca were locked in a battle for second allowing
Raisner to break away from the pack. Once Buccasfusca completed
the pass of Kurtz, he went after Raisner with a mission to win in
mind. Breaking the track record on three separate occasions, the
"Rockaway Rocket" was coming after "Slick' Rick" and once the
leaders hit the lapped traffic it was anyone's guess as to who
would prevail. Raisner used the lapped trafiic to his advantage
and came away with his second win of the season at Hamlin.
Buccafusca was the runner up in a great drive and Chris Kurtz,
Kody Welsh and AJ Tonkin completed the top five. The new track
record set for the division is now set at 14.590 seconds per lap.
"The Wild Child" Brian Gilmore was quick to assert himself in the
rookie 600 encounter and wired the field in a great drive. Joe
Kata III was second with Jessica Moyer, Ryan Wood and Mark
Berkenstock finishing up the top five. Mick D'Agostino was the
early leader in the rookie 270 Micro main event. Garden Stater
Glenn Macomber came out of the ranks to take over the lead and led
until lap 12 when Port Crane, New York's Jeffrey Anderson seized
control of the event and went on to capture the exciting win over
Macomber, Austin Bishop, Mick D'Agostino and Mackenzie Harper.
The Super Slinger feature had Paul Ennes in the zone as he not
only drove away from the tough field but in the process broke the
track record for the division on three separate occasions during
the run. The new record for the Super Slingers is 14.310 seconds
per lap. "Double J" Jimmy Johnston was the runner up with the
returning Joe Bodenschatz in third place in a great drive and Dale
Kober and Bob Clark completing the top five .
A Dash for Cash was run for the 270 Micros and sponsored by
Nunzi's Advertising Specialties, Rob Warko and Rainbow Roofing and
Elite Pools. The five lap shootout was captured by newcomer Kurt
Conklin with Rob Pajauis second, Mike Esposito third, Gene Burd
fourth and Jacob Hendeshot fifth. That event set the stage for the
270 Micro feature and Coklin picked up where he left off to
capture the lead in the early laps of the event. A restart for the
stalled Jamie Czekai brought the field back together and on the
restart Conklin's mount went sour and he coasted off the race
course. Gene Burd assumed the lead and led the remaining laps to
capture his first win of the season. Darin Batholomew was the
runner up in a great drive with Joe Smith, Nunzi Allegrucci and
Rob Pajauis completing the top five. For Pajauis, the ride was
exciting as he was forced to the rear in an early race incident
and then drove the wheels off his machine to land in the top five.
Dale Kober wired the field in the Regular Slingshot event but the
win was far from easy as the hard driving Paul Ennes broke the
record for the Regulars in trying to track down the defending
champion Kober. The new track record stands at 13.996 seconds.
Behind the pair of veteran campaigners was the "Dirt Diva" Shannon
Smith in third place with teammate Simon Egan in fourth and
defending track champion Billy Clark completing the top five.
The 600 Wingless action had Owego , New York star Parker Evans
grabbing the lead at the start of the event and driving out to an
advantage in the early laps. On lap 9 as he approached lapped
traffic, a spin by Cait Chambers collected the leader and Evans
was through for the evening in a heart breaking turn of events.
When the race resumed, the new leader became Pendell , PA hot shoe
Brett Michalski and he led the remaining laps to collect the win
in a close drive over Mark Gilmore, Bobby Butler, "The Topton
Tornado" Brett Arndt and Shelby Harper.
The NASCAR Crew Challenge was the closer for the weekend of hot
racing action. Todd Carmichael took the lead at the start and
drove away in the early laps until a determined Kevin White found
the rhythm in his mount to challenge. As the drivers hit lapped
traffic, the racing got wild as Carmichael now had to negotiate
through traffic with White hot on his trail. Carmichael thought he
set a pick but White was getting faster and closed quickly on
Carmichael as the checkered flag fell on the event with Todd
Carmichael making his early race prediction come true as he held
off Kevin White for the win. Sean Kerlin was third with Brad Tunny
fourth. Jeff Hardwick completed the top five with John Hunter
Nemechek doing a great job to record a sixth place finish.
Former Lake Moc a Tek
Speedway Co-Announcer Justin Beltrame filled in for Speedway
Announcer Steve Pados on Friday evening and did a great job at
capturing the excitement of the great racing action found at the
Hamlin Speedway. Beltrame recently moved back into the area from
Virginia and was amazed at how racy the Hamlin facility is.
Another former Lake Moc a Tek racer and champion Ed Strada Jr. was
on hand for the racing action and informed Pados he is the process
of purchasing a Slingshot race car for a family member in the near
future. Strada was a many time champion at the defunct LMS as was
his Dad, the late Ed Strada Sr. Randy Filipowski, the Accord
Speedway flagger was on hand for the event and has become a big
fan of small division racing. Former racer and now car owner, Tim
Manieri was on hand and helped Pados with the driver interview
session during the rain delay. The NASCAR stars had "Front Row
Joe" Nemechek on hand and Joe was happy to se his son John Hunter
take a turn at the wheel. Jess Benke had all of the NASCAR guys
sign her driving helmet. The
defending National Slingshot
Champion "The Bangor Renegade" Cody Kline has endured the year
from hell as he expired a motor early in the program and was
forced out of the evening's competition.
A Packed
Night
Steve Pados, GA
The Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania set aside another great day
for exciting racing action and the Hamlin Speedway took full
advantage of the allotted time and enjoyed another banner night at
the premier action track in the region. Buoyed by a field of 133
talented racers and a large crowd on hand, the Smith Family kicked
off the eight feature program early and even with the dual heat
format for the Mid Atlantic Gold Tour Slingshots, the racing was
signed, sealed and delivered by 10:25 PM. When all was said and
done, seven different winners graced victory lane with "The
Rockaway Rocket" Danny Buccafusca claiming both victories in the
Junior Slingshot action.
The make-up feature from a week ago for the Junior Slingshots
kicked off the main events. Honesdale hot shoe Kody Welsh take the
lead at the drop of the green flag and led to turn two before
yielding to Danny Buccafusca, who found the topside of the raceway
to his liking and rocketed off turn two with the lead and
proceeded to drive away from the field to capture the win, his
second of the season in the hotly contested division for the stars
of tomorrow. Tyler Dipple returned to the speedway and drove a
great race to finish in the runner up slot with Rosalyn
Trautschold finishing in third place and Ricky Raisner and Chris
Kurtz completing the top five. Sixteen Juniors were on hand for
the evening's races.
The Mid Atlantic Gold Tour for the Slingshots was the last event
on the schedule but the headline attraction for the evening of
racing entertainment. An all front row of S&S Speedway cars found
Simon Egan grab the lead coming out of turn two on the first
lap of the thirty lap encounter. Egan actually made contact with
the Jersey Barriers in completing the pass but kept his foot in
the throttle as he took control of the point. Dale Kober remained
close for a few laps but Egan quickly found a rhythm with his race
car and opened up some distance on Kober and in doing so
established a new track record for the Regular Slingshots with a
time of 13.943 seconds for the lap. While some caution flags
slowed the field at times, Egan was the man on a mission as he was
able to open up the real estate between he and Kober to a safe
distance.
Meanwhile, the racing in the pack was tight, exciting and with a
bit of paint-swapping thrown in as the racers fought hard for
position with every passing go around. The "Dirt Diva" Shannon
Smith was making her first Slingshot start of the season at Hamlin
and was fresh off a win at another speedway and found the short
way around the oval and began to reel in Dale Kober. A caution on
the 24th lap brought about a six lap shootout among the top
drivers. Up to the task, Egan blistered the fifth mile raceway on
lap-27 to establish yet another track record as he lowered the
standard to 13.896 seconds. Egan drove in for the victory in an
outstanding drive with Dale Kober in for the runner up role.
Shannon Smith was third with recent newcomer to the Hamlin field
J.R. Fulper coming in for a great fourth place performance. Hard
riding Bobby Van Blarcom completed the top five. Defending track
champion Billy Clark was sixth with Richie Van Orden, Kyle Rode,
Bradley Crouse and Nathan West completing the top ten .
Plainfield Township,
Pennsylvania racer Tony Iudicello used his front row starting spot
to his advantage as he took the lead at the drop of the green flag
to establish himself as a contender for the 600 Wingless Micro
headliner. Iudicello was clean and green as he stretched his lead
in the early laps of the event. From seventh starting position,
Pendel , Pennsylvania gasser Brett Michalski came storming through
the field. Michalski used all of the racetrack to click off
consistent 12.4 second laps on his way to the point. Iudicello
bobbled on lap nine between turns one and two and Michalski seized
the opportunity to slide by and take over the lead. Racing was
tough throughout the field and squeezing out the real estate
created some altercations on the speedway for the talented field
of racers in action. Michalski had the fast hot rod as he was able
to hold off a determined Bobby Butler to capture his first Hamlin
win of the season. Butler was the runner up and on his way past
Iudicello was able to post the fast time during the race with a
clocking of 12.306 seconds as he tried to run down the high flying
Michalski. Iudicello was third in the event capping a great run
for the low buck team who sat out for a few weeks to be able to go
racing last evening. Stan "The Man" Tykarski was fourth in the
main and Shannon Smith created another milestone in her driving
career as she recorded her first top five finish in the 600
division. Defending track champion Mark Gilmore, Jeff Schall,
Jerry Mack, Matt Mountz and rookie Alex Curley completed the top
ten running order.
The Rookie 600 event saw Rhett Long get upside down at the start
of the event. On the restart it was Geordan Farry powering into
the lead and the lady racer led the first four laps of the event
before yielding to New York hot shoe Joe Kata III as the
"Goshen Gladiator" found the line he wanted around the speedway
and proceeded to drive away from the field to record the win, his
second of the new season at Hamlin. Alex Curley, who has been
making the weekly trek to Hamlin from Massachusetts , was second
in a solid night night of racing for the New Englander. Geordan
Farry was third in her best outing to date and likewise for Ed
Jones who was fourth in his Redemption Racing sponsored machine.
The "Rocketman" Ryan Wood completed the top five.
The Rookie 270 Micro action found the "Branchville Bullet" Kyle
Rutledge grab the lead at the opening bell and drive away from the
field to record the win over Mohnton resident Trevor Dunn in one
of the Rob Warko Group sponsored mounts. Jeffrey Anderson was
third with John Vreeland finishing up in fourth place and
Belvidere , New Jersey racer Glenn Macomber completing the top
five.
Asbury,
New Jersey driving ace Rob Pajauis took advantage of a front row
starting spot to grab the lead at the drop of the green flag and
hold off the heated advances of fellow Garden Stater Mike Esposito
to record a Hamlin Speedway win in his recent return to the
speedway. Mike Esposito was in for a solid second place finish and
Darin Bartholomew was finally able to overcome the nagging
gremlins of his race car to record a fine third place finish. Rick
Casario was fourth and another newcomer in recent weeks Kevin
Pritchard completed the top five. Matt Mountz, Rich O'Neill, Jacob
Hendershot, Ashley Harper and Kurt Bettler completed the top ten.
In Super Slinger action, Mount Cobb gunslinger Henry Anderson
grabbed the lead at the drop of the green and immediately drove
away from the field to record a win at the speedway and in doing
so broke the track record on three separate occasions during his
25-lap excursion around the Hamlin track. The new standard for the
Super Slingers is 14.139 seconds for the lap. Paul Ennes was the
runnerup with Tommy Arntz in third, former Modified hot shoe
Johnny Strupp fourth and Tommy Vroom Jr getting untracked to
record a top five finish.
The nightcap for the Juniors was pretty much the same as the first
event as Danny Buccafusca quickly found his way around Kody Welsh
on lap five and then drove away to a convincing win over the "Codeman"
Kody Welsh. Tyler Dipple was third with T.J. Lilly coming through
the pack from 11th starting position to claim fourth place and
"Slick" Rick Raisner continuing his excellent racing with
another top five performance. For Buccafusca, it was his third win
of the season.
The warm sunshine at Hamlin gave way to some cool weather and
found most people scrambling for a windbreaker before the evening
was completed. Randy Smith was once again at the controls of
staying ahead of the constantly changing track and brought out the
moisture machine whenever it was needed to keep the speedway
surface tacky throughout the racing activity.
The largest field of Slingshots of the season signed in at Hamlin
or at anywhere in the country for that matter as 35 stout
competitors tried their hand at making it into the headline
feature event. 2009 National Slingshot Champion "The Bangor
Renegade" Cody Kline was making his first start of the season
since injuring his wrist in a non-racing incident and was credited
with a 15th place finish after rebounding from an early skirmish
on the speedway. Garden Stater Matt Dealaman scored the best
finish for the invaders as he finished in 11th place. Matt Mertz
was 16th and Brandon Azzalina 20th for the touring stars
indicating just how difficult it is to crack the tough Hamlin
starting lineup. Zack Azzalina and Anthony Schlosser-White were
among the invaders who failed to make the final transfer into the
feature event. New drivers appearing at the speedway included
Charlie Shaver in the former John Wesp machine and Troy
Langendorfer who finally put in some track time after suffering
mechanical woes a week ago.
Tyler DeVault made his Hamlin debut and and the Garden Stater
recorded a fourteenth place finish in his debut in his sharp
looking racer. The brothers Carber, Brian and Mike returned to the
speedway and Brian was an early retiree in the evening with motor
woes. Mike was involved in a late race altercation and did not
finish the event. Cait Chambers made her first 2010 racing start
and encountered some problems during the evening. Cody Smith made
his Hamlin debut aboard one of the Redemption racers and Mark
Berkenstock was aboard his brother's racer for the evening. Joe
Smith was back in action in one of the Rob Warko mounts and was
scored in 12th place in the 270's and Amanda Quinones was back in
action but was an early retiree in the main event in one of the
Chuck Clark racers. Robbie Watson suffered a tip-over in the main
event and suffered some damage severe enough to eliminate him from
the racing action. Jack Benke tried his hand in the Super Slingers
and found the going a bit tough in the over-35 racing division.
Chris Stockham, who enjoyed a great Friday evening at another
speedway in his 600 Xcel car with a runnerup finish was an early
retiree in the 600 Micro main in his National Parts Peddler
sponsored mount. Dylan Martin returned to the speedway and
finished 8th after being slowed by a couple of skirmishes on the
speedway.
Former 2008 National Slingshot Champion and Hamlin Speedway
Champion, "The Eynon Aggressor" Ben Whitaker was on hand as a
spectator for the evening as was Accord Speedway flagger Randy
Filipowski, who is following the progress of close family friend's
son Joe Kata, who snared his second win of the season.
Hamlin
Speedway Falls Victim To Mother Nature After
Heat Events
By:
Steve Pados, GA
Motorsports Media
Despite
a valiant effort by the track management and the 130 race teams
that traveled to the speedway for another Saturday night of great
racing excitement, the forces of Mother Nature proved to be too
powerful and all feature events were cancelled for the evening at
the "Action Track in the Pocono's" the Hamlin Speedway. The racing
action on the raceway was excellent early on with a strong series
of heat events for all divisions except for the winged warriors of
the 270 Micro Sprint division, who did time trials to determine
the starting field for the 30-lap event that was to pay out
$750.00 to the winner along with some contingency bucks offered up
by headline sponsor Dickie Keiper Racing Supplies located
in Saylorsburg, Pennsylvania. The speedway was once again in
tip-top shape as the 1/5 mile clay oval offered some great side by
side racing action throughout the seven speedway divisions. The
fast time in the 270 Micro Sprint division was set by Wapwallopen
resident Gene Burd as Burd stopped the clocks with a 11.952 lap
time to claim the $50.00 prize posted by Dickie Keiper Racing
Supplies who also added in two $25.00 prizes for second and third
place fast times and captured by Robbie Watson and defending track
champion Nunzi Allegrucci.
Kicking off the heat racing
action found a series of exciting heat racing action taking
place. The "Rockaway Rocket" Danny Buccafusca, captured the
first heat in the Junior Slingshots with a win over "The
Communicator" Mathew Gaughan. Lehigh Valley hot shoe "Slick"
Raick Raisner
captured the
second heat win in a great drive over last
week's Junior
Slingshot feature event winner Rosalyn Trautschold. Rhett Long
won the 600 Rookie Wingless heat event in wire to wire drive
over the "Goshen Gladiator" Joey Kata III. Aaron Henneforth
found victory lane for the first time ever in a heat race win
over Mathew Langbein in the first Super Slinger heat event and
defending track champion the "Oxford Express" Dale Kober
captured the second with a win over the hard driving Henry
Anderson. 600 Wingless Micro action found track champion the
"Wild Thing" Mark Gilmore claiming a heat win over Billy Clark
in the first and Brett Michalski winning the second in a great
drive over "The Conductor" Bobby Butler. Brittany Tresch won the
third heat as she left the field in her wake at the start and
won over Green Lane driving talent Gary Berkenstock. Port Crane,
New York 's "The Warrior" Jeff Anderson won the 270 Rookie Micro
heat event over Austin Burke. Nathan "The Wild Wild" West
captured the first Slingshot heat over New Yorker Vinny Zazzero and
the "Flying Dutchman" Richie Van Orden captured the second heat
with a win over the hard charging Matt Massone. "Double J" Jimmy
Johnston captured the third heat with a win over go kart convert
Jess Benke in her best performance to date in her new division
in 2010.
While Mother Nature eventually won out, the intermittent showers
that came and went throughout the evening made for a tacky wide
racy surface that offered plenty of exciting racing action that
saw as many as three distinct racing grooves formed on the raceway
that created the many side by side battles on the speedway.
Promoter Randy Smith sprung into action with each passing shower
and the show was able to move along on time despite the many
delays for the rain showers.
Additional
contingency dollars were made available through the courtesy of
Hartman's Landscaping based out of the Garden State . The Hartman
Family has added an additional
$50.00 to the winner of the 600 event with $25.00 set
aside for the
second and third place finishers.
"The Boss" Ross Perchak was among the notables on hand for a run
at the bucks at the speedway in the 270 Micro division. Tommy
Kunsman Sr. and Jr. returned to Hamlin action for the first time
in two weeks after Kunsman Jr. got upside down in a racing
incident. Mark Manieri Jr made his first Hamlin appearance and
found a pretty fast line around the raceway in his self built
beautiful appearing Micro. Todd Bertand made the trip down from
the New England States to compete in the event and looked strong
in qualifying and in the hot lap sessions before the rains came.
Dave Nelson made his first Hamlin appearance as did Rob Pajauis
from Asbury , New Jersey . In the Slingshots, Steve Yankowski Sr.
and Jr. made their first appearances at the speedway in 2010.
Amanda Quinones made her first Hamlin start in a couple of seasons
and Steve Intravaia made his first appearance since last summer,
both up from the Carolinas .
Harlee Schaeffer, who has already visited victory lane in 2010,
was back in action as was her sister Cheyenne in the rookie 270
Micro action. John Vreeland also made his first Hamlin start.
Dalton Smale made his second appearance of the season in the
former Mark Berkenstock championship mount and was getting around
the race track very well as he scored a top five finish in his
heat event. Jimmy Babb, a multi-time feature event winner last
season at the Accord Speedway and the runnerup in the Slingshot
points at Accord, made his first Hamlin appearance of the season
and the Garden Stater qualified for the main event. Troy Langendorfer
made his first appearance, but problems with the race car kept the
Honesdale resident on the sidelines for at least another week. JR
Fulper made his first Hamlin action and the driving talent came in
for a third place run in his heat event.
With seven feature events to be accounted for, track managment set
aside some time after the races to determine how to include the
events into future Hamlin programs while remaining on time with
the well-paced racing program. The Junior Slingshot feature will
be made up next week on May 15th. The speedway will be idle on May
22nd but will roar back to life on May 29th with a Memorial Day
Spectacular that will include extra distance events for all racing
divisions and the make-up 270 and 600 Micro feature events from
the May 8th cancellation tonight. Additional details will be
included in future press releases as well as the speedway website.
Ryan Smith Bags A
Double To Share Hamlin Speedway Spotlight
With Five New Winners
On Dickie Keiper Racing Supplies Night
By:
Steve Pados, GA
Motorsports Media
Beautiful warm weather and seven divisions of racing excitement
filled the Hamlin Speedway speed arena last evening as more than
130 entries signed in to do battle at the Smith Family's Pocono
playground. With fresh clay and much work done during the week to
add to the already great facility, a standing room only crowd
witnessed the many seasoned veterans and stars of tomorrow perform
their special brand of magic on the racy 1/5 mile speedway. When
all was said and done it was Kunkletown hot shoe "Flyin" Ryan
Smith gracing victory lane two times during the evening and
walking away with a fistful of cash as he captured the 270 Micro
feature and then closed the show with a spectacular drive in the
600 Wingless Micro event to claim the $750.00 cash prize in the
exciting 30-lap feature headliner for the wingless warriors. Five
additional division winners were crowned during the evening's
events that saw Parkville , New York second generation driving
talent Rosalyn Trautschold claiming her first win in a wire to
wire triumph in the Junior Slingshot run for the roses.
Kicking off the racing action found a series of exciting heat
racing action taking place. Trautschold gave strong indication she
held the hot hand as she claimed the first heat win for the Junior
Slingshots that found Garden Stater Joe Malson Jr capturing the
second heat win in a great drive. Round Robin Time Trials followed
to set the line-up for the top 18 qualifiers in the headline 600
event and Joseph J Smith, in his Redemption Racing entry, clicked
off the quickest lap with a time of 12.312 seconds for the 31
entries on hand for the evening. Paul Ennes and Tom Arntz captured
Super Slinger heat wins and Ryan Smith, Rich O'Neill and newcomer
Austin Burke were victorious in 270 Micro heat action. 600
Wingless Rookie action found Joey Kata III and Shannon Smith
collecting wins and champion quarter midget convert Glenn Macomber
winning the 270 Rookie Micro heat win. Molly Chambers, Dana Smith
and Bobby Van Blarcom captured the Regular Slingshot heat wins.
Two B-Mains were required to establish the starting field for the
600 main event and last week's feature event winner Brittany
Tresch and Tony Iudicello were victorious in gaining entry to the
feature main.
Trautschold jumped into the lead at the drop of the green flag and
quickly established her presence on the speedway. Lap after lap
the young lady held off a talented field of drivers as her racer
was able to maintain great drives off of the top of the racetrack
to remain in front to claim her first win in Hamlin racing action.
Kody Welsh was the runnerup with a great drive late in the event
and Ricky Raisner continued to excel with a strong third place run
while newcomer Taylor Eccles was fourth in his first Hamlin action
and Joe Malson Jr completing the top five.
The 600 Rookie action was curtailed after 15-laps as time ran out
on the event with Norfolk , Massachusetts traveler Alex Curley
claiming the victory over first time performer Jonathan Hull.
Brian Gilmore, Ryan Wood and Rhett Long rounded out the top five
finishers. Trevor Dunn made his trip from Mohnton , Pennsylvania a
successful one as the youngster wired the field to record his
first Hamlin Speedway Rookie 270 win in one of the Rainbow Roofing
sponsored hot rods. Weekend traveler Mick D'Agostino was a
strong runner up with Jeffrey Anderson, newcomer Wyatt Clark and
Glenn Macomber following.
Aaron Hennerforth led the first two laps of the Super Slinger main
before yielding to Effort resident Tom Arntz in his Tittle Used
Parts sponsored entry. Arntz withstood the constant pressure from
Bob Clark as the two veteran campaigners waged a war on the
speedway with lots of side by side racing action and Arntz
crossing under the checkered flag for his first Hamlin triumph.
Clark was second in a strong performance with hard driving Henry
Anderson, Henneforth and Ennes completing the top five.
Former Modified star Mike Esposito was the early leader in the 270
Micro main. Esposito maintained control of the event up until
lap-13 when 8th place starting Ryan Smith sped past him and
proceeded to drive away from the field in the remaining laps and
in doing so quickly established a new track lap record on two
consecutive laps as he lowered the time to 11.581 seconds for the
1/5 mile speedway. Esposito was the runner up with come from
behind Gene Burd overcoming an early spin to race back to third
with Connecticut traveler CJ Heinig and Hellertown's Kurt Bettler
completing the top five.
An all-female front row kicked off the Regular Slingshot main
event. Pole Sitter Molly Chambers grabbed the early lead with Dana
Smith a close second. Matt Massone drove into third place and
the entire field remained close as the laps clicked off. A couple
of cautions had track officials seizing the opportunity to look at
leader Chamber's machine as the car began to make a bit of noise
throughout the event. Coming down for a restart on lap-23, Massone
took a chance to drive to the open door he felt opened up on turn
two but Smith held her ground and the two cars made contact and
Smith went darting for the Jersey barriers. The Smith machine was
damaged and through for the night ending her great drive in the
event and Massone was sent to the rear of the field. The next
restart saw leader Chambers lose the muffler of the her race car
ending her night and her chance for speedway glory and the race
restarted with Mac Brink now the leader. Brink led the final two
laps to capture the win over rookie Colin White, Henry Anderson,
Paul Ennes and Dale Kober.
The final event had Stan "The Man" Tykarski leading the first half
of the race while the heated action behind him made for a
spectacular racing event. Ryan Smith had inched his way through
the tough field from 8th starting position into the runner up slot
and began to utilize all of the lines of the raceway to find the
sweet spot to move past the determined Tykarski.
Smith finally found the line to move past Tykarski on lap-18 and
went on tho lead the final 12-laps of the event to win over first
time performer Ryan Greth, steady Jerry Mack, outside invader "The
Topton Tornado" Brett Arndt and "The Conductor" Bobby Butler.
The early season action at Hamlin has produced excellent side by
racing action and continues to bring out great crowds to the
Pocono facility. The many special events scheduled for the 2010
racing season will continue to reap rewards for the Smith Family
promotional efforts. Wayne Lesher was on hand last evening at
Hamlin as his 600 Pro Series will be in action at Hamlin on June
19th for the first time ever.
Lensman Dennis Takacs was on hand from AARN and Accord Speedway
flagger Randy Filipowski was seen taking in the exciting racing
action. Filipowski will have a first hand look from his starter's
perch at Accord when the Keystone-Empire 600 Wingless Micro series
kicks off next Friday evening on May 7th.
Doug Snyder made his first appearance at Hamlin in 2010 and the
Hellertown resident recorded a 10th place finish in the 600
finale. Super talents Ryan Greth, Brett Arndt, and Mike Rutherford
all qualified for the main with Greth and Arndt both securing top
five finishes. Rutherford was an early dismissal from the event.
Brett Michalski returned to the speedway with two race cars and
had hard driving Shelby Harper aboard the second of the two cars.
Harper was exciting but didn't make the transfer but Michalski
made the transfer and was forced to switch cars for the main event
and made a great drive from 24th starting position to finish the
event in 7th place in the final rundown. Butler made a spectacular
return from his end over end flip from a week a go to claim a top
five finish in the main.
PJ Dempsey returned to action at Hamlin on Saturday and was 8th in
the Super Slinger main event. Former Modified campaigner Johnny
Strupp continues to learn the ropes of the Slingshots and earned a
10th place finish last evening. Mark Henneforth made his first
appearance at Hamlin and recorded an 11th place finish. In the
Junior event, it was Taylor Eccles coming in for the first time
and scoring a fourth place finish in his first outing at Hamlin.
Jonathan Hull made his first appearance a good one as he scored
the runner up position in the 600 Rookie main. Ashley Harper took
over her sister's machine for the evening but did not finish the
main event. Joey Kata III and Geordan Farry both suffered from
blown tires and Shannon Smith broke a shock on her mount to send
the drivers to sidelines prematurely. Jarid Kunkle returned to the
270 action and was 8th in the main event. Bill Darcy made his
first appearance to the speedway in 2010 and did not finish the
main event. Austin Burke made his first appearance and after a
heat race win suffered a multitude of problems the remainder of
the evening. Mike McLaughlin was on the Hamlin scene for the
initial time in 2010 and scored an 8th place finish in the
Slingshot main.
SPEEDWAY NEWS / RACE RESULTS APRIL 24, 2010
Veterans And Young Guns Grace
Victory Circle In Exciting Hamlin Speedway Racing Action
By:
Steve Pados, GA
Motorsports Media
The second week
of the 2010 racing season at the Hamlin Speedway produced another
spectacular night of racing action for the nice sized crowd on hand as a
mix of veterans and young guns shared the spotlight in victory circle in
the exciting seven division show at the smooth as glass action track
nestled in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania. Promoters Denise and
Randy Smith kept the show moving along swiftly and were able to complete
the show despite the fact the final attraction of the evening, the
regular Slingshot main event scheduled for 25-laps, was shortened to
15-laps and ruled official when Mother Nature arrived on the
scene 10 laps before completion and doused out the hot night of
competition for the 125 racing stars signed in to do battle for the
evenings activities.
Kicking off the exciting racing action was a series of heat events for
the seven headline divisions and Mathew Gaughan and Danny Buccasfusca
quickly asserted themselves in a show of what was to happen a bit later
as they captured the heat wins for the talented jam-packed Junior
Slingshot division. Donny Hockman and Tommy Vroom Jr. followed by
capturing heat wins for the Super Slingers. The 270 Micros countered
with last week's feature event winner Matt Mountz and Rick Cascario
securing wins. Jacob Hendershot raced to a win in the 270 Rookie Micros
heat action. Two gifted young talents, 14 year old Danielle Dickinson
and 13 year old Joey Kata III recorded wins in the Rookie 600 Wingless
Micros.
Three heats were required for the regular 600 Wingless Micros with Stan
Tykarski, Keith McIntyre and Billy Clark all recording wins. Three heats
were run for the Regular Slingshot division and Bradley Crouse, Dale
Kober and defending track champion Billy Clark all came away victorious
as the field became set in place for the feature event.
Mathew Gaughan and Danny Buccafusca brought the 16-car field down for
the start of the Junior Slingshot 20-lap feature event. Both cars
entered turn one together but Buccafusca found some bite on the topside
of the well-groomed raceway and took control of the event coming out of
turn 2. Buccafusca was in control until the first caution of the event
on lap 6, when Jenna Schostkewitz threw a wheel in turn 3 and required
wrecker service. When the race resumed, Buccafusca took off and built up
a big advantage between he and the second place man Gaughan. Last week's
feature event winner Ricky Raisner found his way into third place and
enjoyed a tight battle with Chris Kurtz for the position. Buccafusca was
not to be denied on this evening as the "Rockaway Rocket" scored his
first career win at Hamlin in the division. Buccafusca was the only
competitor in the event to be able to break the 15 second lap barrier
and won over "The Communicator" Mathew Gaughan, "Slick" Rick Raisner,
"The Midget" Chris Kurtz and "The Code Man" Kody Welsh.
Super Slinger action found the "Harmony Hurricane" Roger Collins
peddling his buggy out front on the first lap as he proceeded to wire
the 17-car starting field in a great win for the popular campaigner. Tom
Arntz drove from 4th starting position to finish in the runner up slot
and Donny Hockman, Henry Anderson and defending track champion Dale
Kober completed the top five.
The 600 Rookie Wingless Micros took to the track for their feature
attraction and the exciting new division had "The Goshen Gladiator" Joey
Kata III rocket from his outside front row starting position to take the
lead in turn one and turn consistent 12.5 second laps on his way to
victory over Norwalk , Massachusetts young gun Alex Curley. The victory
for Kata came in only his second start in his new division as the former
National Jr. Slingshot Champion has adapted well to the very driveable
machines. Curley, who did some 270 Micro racing last season at Hamlin,
also has looked sharp early in the season as he was turning 12.7
second laps. "The Dirt Diva" Shannon Smith was third in the event and
has looked better and better in the open wheel divisions race cars.
"The Sparkman" Mark Berkenstock was fourth in the event and last week's
feature event winner the "New Wild Child" Brian Gilmore completed the
top five.
The Rookie 270 Micro event had first time at the speedway driver Harlee
Schaeffer take the lead at the start of the event and hold off
a determined Jacob Hendershot to record a win at the speedway.
Hendershot, last week's feature winner, overcame a spin early in the
event to rip back through the pack to challenge Schaeffer each turn of
the event until the checkered flag fell. Duane White, up from the kart
ranks, has adapted to the new division quickly and was third with former
Quarter Midget champion Glenn Macomber finishing fourth and traveling
man Mick D'Agostino completing the top five.
The 270 Micro event brought 19-cars to the starting line with Larry
Mekic jumping into the lead that was halted after one lap when Tommy
Kunsman Jr. got upside down on the backstretch. Kunsman was unhurt in
the incident. When the race resumed, "Lightning Larry" was up to task as
he drove away from the field. By the mid-point of the event, defending
track champion Nunzi Allegrucci began to reel in Mekic with 12 second
lap times but before the race could turn into the battle royal the fans
had hoped for, Mekic had his mount suddenly come to a halt on lap 16.
When the event restarted, Allegrucci raced away to the win with
Wapwallopen's Gene Burd in for the runner up slot and birthday boy
"Rattlesnake" Rich O'Neill giving himself an early present with a third
place finish. Mike Esposito and Robbie Watson completed the top five.
Brittany Tresch took advantage of a front row starting spot to record
her first win of the season in the hotly contested 600 Wingless Micro
feature that was halted after one lap when "The Conductor" Bobby Butler
climbed over a wheel at high speed and was launched into an end over end
flip. Butler was unhurt in the spectacular incident. When the race
resumed, it was Tresch in command with Tony Iudicello and Luke
Schostkewtiz taking up the chase. Tresch was on a rail as she turned in
consistent 12.35 second laps to hold the field at bay. At the midway
point, Iudicello saw his hopes dashed when his steering locked up and
lost many spots and at the same time Jason Van Doren was on the move to
put the heat on Tresch. Tresch was more than up to the task at hand as
she recorded the win with Van Doren in second and Schostkewtiz, Keith
McIntyre and Gary Berkenstock completing the top five.
Defending track champion, "The Factoryville Flyer" Billy Clark took the
lead at the drop of the green to go on and record his first win of the
season at Hamlin. Clark had control of the entire event until Mother
Nature stepped in at the end of the 15th lap and halt the race
proceedings. Two Kyles, Rode and Rutledge, battled behind Clark the
entire distance of the event with Rutledge eking out a second place run
over the "Hot Rod". Dale Kober came from a 9th place start to finish 4th
and Russell Benke turned in a solid performance to complete the top five
running order.
Despite the fact Mother Nature rained on the Hamlin parade, the racing
action was completed by 10 PM. The racing was solid in all seven
divisions with a mix of veteran and young gun drivers all sharing a turn
at the fame and glory in the Hamlin Speedway Victory Circle. Speedway
management encourages all racing fans to come out and take a look at the
new format Hamlin Speedway racing and view for themselves why it is the
"Premier Racing Facility In the Poconos".
Another 125 competitors came to town to try their hand at Hamlin. New
drivers on hand included Thomas Laga, Joe Malson Jr. and Jenna
Schostkewitz in the Juniors, Kevin Oliver, Johnny Strupp and Joe Malson
Sr. in the Supers.
Former
Modified star Johnny Strupp made his first start in the division and
found the sledding a bit tough as he finished in the 14th position after
borrowing the Joe Bodenschatz ride for the evening. Harlee Schaeffer
made her first visit a productive one in securing the win and Austin
Bishop was 7th and Barry Dillman 9th in their first outings at the
speedway. Taylor Urban got upside down in her first Hamlin action. Tommy
Kunsman Sr. and Jr. made their first starts along with Kevin Pritchard,
Jevon Ahner and Jacob Severn in the 270's while Tony Iudicello and Doug
Spatacus were first timers in the 600's. New Slingshot drivers included
Simon Egan who ran 14th and Jessica Armstrong who ran 22nd in their
first appearances at the speedway.
Once again the speedway was in excellent shape offering multi-grooves
for the drivers to seek out the quick way around the race course.
Long-time ARDC car owner Jerry Steward was seen taking in the action at
Hamlin and thoroughly enjoyed his first visit to the speedway in 2010.
Accord Speedway flagger Randy Filipowski also made the trek to the
speedway and felt the racing action was superb. Corky Stockham, from the
Parts Peddler news journal, was on hand at the speedway and offered some
T-Shirts for give aways in trivia questions asked to the crowd. The
50/50 paid $110.00 to Deana Wood.
Joey Kata III will be a TV guest of the
popular CARQUEST Gasoline Alley TV/Internet show on Monday evening from
6 to 8 PM on Channels 103 and 137 and live feed on the internet at:
www.walncableradio.com
to talk about his win in the 600's and at his future in racing. 600
feature winner Brittany Tresch was a recent guest on the show, her
appearance coming just a couple of weeks ago on the program as the Pados
Brothers constantly bring the past,
present and the future
of racing together in their unique look at the world of motorsports.
